Organization Presents Scholarships To Graduates
Members of the Brothers of the Pi Iota Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., recently presented scholarships to three recent high school graduates. Each of the recipients, who received a $2,000 scholarship, have been accepted and enrolled in an institution of higher learning. Donte’ Glover, who graduated from Howard W. Blake High School, will attend Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri; Jordan A. Robinson, a graduate of Gaither High School, will attend Florida A & M University, in Tallahassee, FL; and Riverview High School graduate Kenneth Forward, III, who will attend Morehouse College, in Atlanta, GA. The presentation took place at Bethel A. M. E. Church during their Men’s Day Program. FRANKLIN BOYS PREPARATORY ACADEMY HOSTS ANNUAL CHESS TOURNAMENT
Franklin Boys Preparatory Academy was the site of the HOST Chess Nuts Society Annual Chess Tournament on Wednesday July 20, 2016. More than 300 HOST (Hillsborough County Public Schools Out-of-School Time Program) students participated in the tournament held in the school’s gym. HOST is designed to assist families with a safe and supervised environment before and after school hours. Joshua Johnson, K-2nd grade participant, 4th from left, was the overall chess winner. COACHES PARTICIPATE IN FREDDIE SOLOMON MEMORIAL YOUTH FOOTBALL CAMP
Several community coaches of youth leagues and teams participated recently in the Freddie Solomon Memorial Youth Football Camp. The camp was held on the campus of the University of Tampa, where Solomon played his college football. Professionally, Solomon played for the Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers. He died in February 2012. Youth coaches who assisted with the camp were: kneeling, Charles Johnson, II, Otis House, Ricardo Watson, Sr., Dewan Tyson, Kellen Derr and Gerald Scott. ‘BLACK LIVES MATTER’ PEACEFUL PROTEST DRAWS LARGE CROWD
Recently, several members of the Tampa community joined members of “Black Lives Matter” at the Centennial Park in Ybor City. The event drew people from all walks of life and many parents brought their children to participate in the event. Some members of the Tampa Police Department rode bicycles while others, such as Lieutenant Rodriguez, walked side-by-side with the marchers. Ms. Donna Davis, one of the organizers of the “Black Lives Matter” organization stated that despite inclement weather, more than 300 people attended the event. PEACE MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH HOSTS ORDINATION SERVICE
Church members, family and friends joined Minister Antione Davis and Brother Ricky Banks for their Ordination Service last Saturday, June 25th at Peace Progressive Missionary Baptist Church.
