            The George Edgecomb Bar Association hosted the 35thAnnual Scholarship Banquet on Monday evening, April 23, 2018. The event was held at the Downtown Hilton Hotel. CELEBRITIES JOIN ‘YOU DESERVE TO BE LOVED’ GIRLS’ SUMMIT

             The 2018 “You Deserve To Be Loved” Girls’ Summit was held this past weekend in the auditorium at Middleton High School. There were several activities for girls in 6thto 12thgrades, a variety of speakers and special, surprise guests. Among the celebrities who spent time with the girls on Saturday were: left to right, Tia Norfleet, first Black and only female NASCARdriver; Femita Ayanbeku, Team USA Paralympian and fastest female blade runner; Dr. Jeffery Johnson, founder of the You Deserve To Be LovedGirlsSummit; Dinasty Brown, entrepreneur and Social Media Consultant; and Siobhan Monique, Soul Singer and Song Writer.

MIDDLETON HIGH SCHOOL JROTC AWARDS DAY

                  George Middleton Senior High School held it Awards Day recently for the JROTC. Several area individuals with military affiliation were in attendance, including the school’s first Principal, Henry “Shake” Washington. The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) of Tampa Bay presented certificates to several of the students. Tyna Middleton, President of ASALH, and Deirdre Tatum, Secretary of ASALH, presented certificates to: Nyomi Franco, Ebony Knight, Issac Chang and Michael Hill. PLATINUM ANGELZ RIDERS CLUB HOSTED ANNUAL EVENT 

                  The ladies of the Platinum Angelz Riding Club (R/C) hosted cycle riders from near and far last month when they held their annual event. The event was held at the Letter Carriers Hall in West Tampa and attracted male and female cyclists, representing in their colors. Music was provided by DJ Pun of WURK, FM 96.3. The Platinum Angelz R/C uses proceeds from the event for their community projects. ‘ANNUAL CUDDLE UP AND READ’ PROGRAM HELD

 

            On Saturday, April 14th, Ms. Cora Dunkley held her 5thAnnual “Cuddle Up And Read” Program. The well attended event was held at Seminole Heights Library, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Several families and volunteers were on hand to motivate children to read everyday. The children participated in several activities that involved reading and learned about Dr. George Washington Carver, who was the focal point of the event. Each child received a new book at the end of the event. Ms. Dunkley was assisted by Ms. Maxine Davis in making the program possible.          Wednesday, April 11, 2018 was National College Signing Day. Middleton High School held two events to recognize its Third Annual National Signing Day. The events were held in the Henry “Shake” Washington Auditorium. The event on April 11thwas for students who signed to attend Hillsborough Community College (HCC). The event on Friday, April 13thwas for students signing with other colleges. CEREMONY HELD FOR LEGACY WALL DEDICATION

 

            On April 6th, members of the community gathered at Booker T. Washington Elementary School for the Legacy Wall Dedication Ceremony.  The purpose of the Wall is to showcase the history of the school and highlight some of its students from throughout the year. Some information about the original Booker T. Washington High School was taken from a 1931 Yearbook donated to the school. The event was well attended by former students such as Mrs. Doris Ross Reddick and Mr. James Hammond, both of whom are featured on the Wall. Among those in attendance were student participants: Jahquez Louis, Kimberly Hernandez, and Briana House, shown on the front row from left to right. TAMPA CHAPTER OF THE LINKS HOSTS CAREER DAY FOR RADIANT JEWELS AT VAN BUREN

 

         The Tampa Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, hosted Career Day for their mentoring group, the Radiant Jewels, at Van Buren Middle School on Wednesday, March 28th. The mentoring group represents chosen 8th grade girls who are about to transition to high school. Fourteen professions were represented at Career Day, chaired by Link Kay Andrews. Link Ozepher Wilds is the Services To Youth Facet Chair and Link Renee Lee is President.  Van Buren staffers, Mrs Cynthia Forward, Student Success Coach and Mrs. ….. Cannedy, ….. are supervisors.
