The Board of Directors of Opportunity Plus For Minority Student Success, Inc. awarded five scholarships to area students to further their education. The Board set up criteria from which the students were selected. Each student received a $500 award. The 5 students are: Dominiuque Barker, Tarris Bell, Khai Grubbs, Patrice Hill and JeMeia Porter. Former City Councilwoman Gwendolyn “Gwen” Miller was joined by her husband, the mayor and current members of the Tampa City Council for the renaming ceremony of a community center. The Renaming Ceremony was held Tuesday, September 27, 2011, at the Woodland Terrace Community Center, 6408 N. 32nd Street. The center is now Gwendolyn Miller Community Center. The Greater Tampa Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Foundation held its 2nd Annual Youth Economic Leadership Summit (Y. E. S.) on Saturday, September 24, 2011, at the Ybor Campus of Hillsborough Community College. More than 200 youth had received invitations to participate. Recently, the children of Percy and Maria Hodges and some 150 guests celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. The event was held at the Cuban Hall Patio, where the guests of honor met some 62 years ago.
Guests enjoyed Cuban cuisine, a musical program, and tributes from family and friends. The highlight of the evening, however, was a letter of congratulations from President Barack Obama as well as a letter from Mayor Bob Buckhorn. Daffany K. Browning and Jerry A. Brunson, Jr. exchanged wedding vows before family and friends on Saturday, September 3, 2011. The 5 p. m. ceremony was held at the Hilton Airport Westshore. Reverend Oscar Johnson, Jr. was the officiating minister. Daffany’s parents are Mary K. Browning and Kenneth L. Browning. Jerry is the son of the late Bessie Brunson and Jerry A.     The Middleton High School  Class of 1959 celebrated their 70th birthday last month with a weekend of events at the Little Harbor Resort in Ruskin. They enjoyed eating carioca sandwiches, drinking Nehi sodas and peanuts; prayer on the beach; dancing the chicken and twist to music of their era and on Sunday they gathered for worship. The Howard W. Blake “Soulful Class” Of 1971 celebrated their 40th-year reunion last month at the Cruis-A-Cade. They started on Thursday with “Hospitality Night” and concluded the following Thursday with a “Spaghetti Dinner Celebration” at the home of Yvonne Glasgow.  Classmates came from as far as California and Virginia and as close as Ft. Myers and West Palm Beach, Florida. Bay Area Medical Association (BAMA) held its quarterly meeting Wednesday at the Rusty Pelican Restaurant. Three speakers addressed the medical professionals and their guests. The “Tremendous” Tampa District hosted an Appreciation Celebration Service on Sunday, August 28, 2011 for their Presiding Elder, Rev. Dr. Henry E. Green, Jr. The service was held at St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church with Rev. Michael B. Price as host pastor. Many of the churches in the “Tremendous” Tampa District were in attendance.
