On Friday, December 9th, the Tampa-Hillsborough County Human Rights Council hosted their 38th Annual Human Rights Awards Breakfast. The event was held at the DoubleTree Hotel on Cypress. The Council paid tribute to several individuals who courageously traveled by bus and train through the southern states to integrate public spaces 50 years ago. The theme for the program this year was “Freedom Riders: Then and Now.” Among those attending the breakfast are from left are: Greg Williams, Sonja Jordan, Tanya J. Williams, Yvette Lewis, Erika L. Approximately 600 females from area middle and high schools were in attendance on Wednesday in the auditorium at Middleton High School for the original performance of “Black Girl Speaks.”  Students from Middleton, Blake and Hillsborough High Schools and Ferrell Middle School were in attendance. “Black Girl Speaks” is a performance by Talitha Anyabwele, CEO and Artistic Director of BGS Productions, Inc. The purpose of the performance is to empower young women. For the 25th consecutive year, Donatello’s Restaurant has closed its door to the public on Thanksgiving Day to provide a sumptuous meal for many less fortunate children who may not be able to get a traditional Thanksgiving meal. With the assistance of several adults, more than 900 young people were served the traditional meal with all the trimmings. The Bay Area Medical Association (BAMA) had a special guest at its November meeting. The National Medical Association (NMA) made a special presentation by its Project IMPACT during the meeting on minority participation in research trials, titled, “The What, Why and How of Minority Physician Participation in Clinical Trials.” The new Executive Director of the National Medical Association was in Tampa for the presentation.  The Pi Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Fraternity, Inc. held its 2011 Achievement Awards Presentation on Sunday, November 13, 2011. The group worshipped with their fraternity brother, Rev. Alec Hall at New St. Matthew M. B. Church. Awards were presented to Cyril Blythe Andrews, III, Community Service Award; Robert Scott, III and Morris L. Williams, Sr. were recipients of the Pi Iota Chapter 2011 Superior Service Awards; and the Pi Iota Chapter 2011 Omega Man of the Year Award was presented to William Cade. From left to right are: Rev. On November 5th, members of the Tampa Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority hosted “Strengthening Our Future, Moving Our Kids.” The event took place at Howard W. Blake High School. Some of the activities included relay races, a kickball tournament, healthy food samples and Diabetes Prevention & Control classes. The grand opening of Metro 510, a new housing development in downtown Tampa at 510 E. Harrison St., was held on Wednesday. Approximately $6.1 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was directed towards this project. The historic St. Paul AME Church was rehabilitated as part of this effort. Members of the Howard W. Blake Senior High School Class of 1970 celebrated their 40th reunion October 7-10, 2011. The Embassy Suites Westshore Blvd. was the headquarters for several of the activities. The veterans in that class were recognized by a patriotic tribute presented by Deborah D. Larry, who expressed gratitude for their service to this country.  The veterans introduced themselves by announcing their rank, name and branch of military served. The veterans recognized were from left: Silas Fisher, James Hardwick, Johnny Arline, Earl Conage, Theodore (Teddy) Ricks, Gloria Pilcher Shaw, Ira Cruse, Peter Smith, Jerry Taylor, James Jennings and Jonas Harris.
