FLORIDA MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY’S NEW PRESIDENT MEETS WITH TAMPA COMMUNITY

Dr. Henry Lewis, III, the new president of Florida Memorial University, was in Tampa last Thursday and Friday to share his vision with the community. Rev. Dr. Bartholomew Banks, Pastor of St. John Progressive Missionary Baptist Church and President of the Progressive M&E Baptist State Convention, hosted a ‘Forum With the President’ ON Thursday evening at St. John Progressive. On Friday, Dr. Lewis was the honored guest at a luncheon at the Tampa Airport Hilton hosted by the Florida Memorial University Tampa Alumni Chapter. FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA BRINGS ‘LET’S MOVE!’ INITIATIVE TO TAMPA

First Lady Michelle Obama was in Tampa Thursday promoting her ‘Let’s Move’ initiative, which is all about “folks from every sector of our society stepping up and coming together on behalf of our kids,” she said. Her appearance was at National Supermarket where she was joined by Goya Foods President, Bob Unanue. Goya Foods is the largest Hispanic-owned, U. S. food company. The First Lady said, “One of the pillars of ‘Let’s Move!’ is empowering parents with the information they need to make healthy choices.” Goya has committed to promoting the USDA’s MyPlate or MiPlato to remind families about making healthy choices with posters, cookbooks, recipes and pamphlets. TOBA HOSTS 32nd ANNUAL DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. LEADERSHIP BREAKFAST

The Tampa Organization of Black Affairs (TOBA) hosted the 32nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Breakfast on Monday, January 16, 2012 at the downtown Hyatt Regency Hotel. 12th ANNUAL HERITAGE FESTIVAL LUNCHEON FEATURES DR. FLOYD FLAKE

One of the events of the 10-day celebration of the Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival was the 12th Annual Martin Luther King Heritage Leadership Luncheon. This year’s Festival theme is “Keeping the Dream Alive – Something for Everyone.” The luncheon was held at the University Area Community Center. The featured speaker was Reverend Dr. Floyd H. FRANCES CHEEKS JENNINGS CELEBRATES 70th BIRTHDAY

A celebration of life gala event in honor of Frances Cheeks Jennings was held on Friday, December 30, 2011 at the Egypt Temple Shrine. The adult-only event was sponsored by her children – Michael and Edwenia Prayon of Augusta, GA, Cedrick Jennings, and Walter and Charmain Jennings of Tampa.
