The Council of Judges of the National Bar Association visited students at St. Peter Claver Catholic School on Friday, April 20, 2012. They were in town for the National Bar Association Convention. The newest Tampa Family Health Centers had its Grand Opening on Wednesday, April 11, 2012.  There are now 13 centers in Hillsborough County to provide medical care for underserved residents. The clinic is located in Sulphur Springs at 8108 N. City of Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn was at Middleton High School on Wednesday to tape his weekly TV program, ‘The Mayor’s Hour’ with Jack Harris. While at the school, he visited with students in the Science Lab. President Barack Obama was in town on Friday to talk about business coming to the Port of Tampa. He spoke to a group of supporters at the Tampa Port Authority. But prior to meeting with the excited crowd, the President met with some union workers from ILA Local 1402, James Harrell, President. Among those who had an opportunity to take the president on the tour were: Hugh Overton, 54 years of service as a longshoreman; Robert Doster, 35 years; Wardell Norman, Vice President, 35 years; Larry Coleman, Vice President; Ernest Richards, Jr., 30 years, and William Forde, 35 years. Fifth Third Bank presented a $2,000 donation to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) recently at the Fifth Third – Lee Roy Selmon Banking Center. Shalonda Love, the winning caller on Tampa Bays’ 95.7 “The Beat” (WBTP-FM) during Fifth Third Bank’s African-American History Maker Campaign, selected the UNCF as the organization to received the donation. Ms. Love was one of 20 $50 MasterCard gift card winners and the $1,000 grand prize winner chosen at the end of the month. Both checks were presented during this presentation. The Gamma Omicron Boule of Signa Pi Phi Fraternity, Inc. presented the 25th Annual Dr. Carter G. Woodson Lecture Series on Saturday, March 31, 2012. The event was held at the downtown Hyatt Hotel. The keynote speaker was Attorney Charles Ogletree, a Harvard law professor, who also served as an advisor to President Barack Obama. Atty. The Howard W. Blake Athletic Booster Club honored Mose Powell for the many lives he touched as an auto mechanics instructor at Don Thompson, Blake and Plant High Schools. Several of his former students were there to thank him for touching their lives and providing them with a career path. In addition to being an instructor, Mr. Powell was the bus driver at Blake responsible for getting the athletic teams to their games – in and out of state. The Tampa Metropolitan Alumnae Ch Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted a seminar for young males. “Empowering Males To Bu9ild Opportunities For Developing Independence” was the theme of the seminar held on March 24, 2012 at Young Middle Magnet School. Speakers included: Toby Johnson, Major Gerald Honeywell, Dwayne Broxton, Dr. Maurice Harvey, and Hugh Campbell. The Annual Men’s Health Forum was held on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at the Marshall Center at the University of South Florida. The event provided free men’s health checkups and screenings. A limited number of men received a free prostate exam voucher. Numerous physicians, pharmacists and nurses donated their time to the event. There were also concerned women who donated their time to encourage and assist the men who came out.
