Tampa Police arrested a 20-year-old man and charged him with 3 counts of vehicular homicide and 3 counts of DUI Manslaughter. The charges stem from a traffic accident that left three people dead in September 2010.
According to police, Ernest Smith, III, was arrested at his home Monday afternoon. Elder Walter Charles Givens, 67, and his wife, Mrs. Dion Givens, 45, died at the scene. Her co-worker, Ms. Helen Cummings, 58, who was ejected from the car, died at Tampa General Hospital.
Detectives said the event data in the recorder of the car driven by Smith indicated that Smith was traveling 84 miles per hour when he approached the intersection. Blood tests administered at the hospital also revealed Smith was driving under the influence of alcohol.
