For nearly twenty years, a Tampa woman served as an advocate for families residing in a public housing complex. She died on Monday following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Loujean “Ms. Jean” Williams, 68, became an employee of the City of Tampa Police Department March 23, 1970, and assigned to the Crime Prevention Bureau. Under the leadership of the late Mrs. Patricia Pierce Coleman, Mrs. Williams worked in the Robles Park Public Housing Complex.
After Mrs. Pierce Coleman retired, Mrs. Williams became the Crime Prevention Coordinator. Although she was assigned to the Robles Pond area, she worked with others in other housing complexes.
Said Her Goodbyes
Mrs. Debbie Brown, Mrs. Williams’ daughter-in-law, said Mrs. Williams was diagnosed with congestive heart failure several years ago. But, she handled the illness well until about a month ago.
She was admitted to the University Community Hospital for tests after complaining of not feeling well. “She decided she needed rehabilitation and was admitted to John Knox Rehabilitation Center. She was supposed to come home on Monday, but she died at 1:48 p.m.
“Friday night, she had me to hold the telephone to her ear and I called several people for her. She told them goodbye and that she wouldn’t be able to be there for them anymore.
“On Sunday, she talked to her son and each of her grandchildren and told them what she wanted them to do. When she was finished, she told the nurse she was ready for the morphine drip,” Mrs. Brown said.
Funeral services for Mrs. Williams will take place on Saturday. Ray Williams Funeral Home is in charge of handling arrangements.
