Man Charged In Jackson Court Shooting

Tampa Police detectives received tips about a suspect being sought in the shooting of two people at the Jackson Court Apartments Sunday night. After learning detectives were looking for him, Quinton Thompson, 21, accompanied by his mother, voluntarily turned himself in at the District III headquarters Tuesday.

Detectives interviewed Thompson and determined he was involved in the shootings. He was charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery.

Police said an unknown suspect started shooting into the crowd, wounding Tawanna Williams, 18, and James Wade, 15. Williams was 8-months-pregnant at the time of the shooting. Hospital officials said she and her baby by are doing fine.

Wade sustained a gunshot wound to his leg and was hospitalized for treatment.

Elder Michelle B. Patty, owner of The Michelle B. Patty Accident Referral Services and co-founder of Krunk For Christ Mentoring Ministries, and Corey “KingCobra” Felton, owner of King Cobra Enterprises and co-founder of Krunk For Christ Mentoring Ministries, have collaborated their efforts to assist Gospel artists with exposing their talents.

“Our showcase gave Gospel artists an opportunity to showcase their talents to industry music professionals,” said Elder Patty.

“Now, we want to give aspiring Gospel artists a chance to shine free of charge on the Michelle B. Patty and King Cobra Gospel Segment every Sunday from 7 a. m. to 7:30 a. m. on 1150AM WTMP. This is our way of giving back to the community and saying thank you to all who have used our services over the years.”

Plaintiff In County Desegre-gation Case Dies

The man whose name was used to filed the desegregation suit against Hillsborough County Board of Education died last week. He was 58 years old.

Andrew L. Manning was admitted to the hospital last Sunday, March 6, 2011, and died on Monday, March 7, 2011 of congestive heart failure, a caregiver stated.

Court documents state that with the assistance of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Attorneys Constance Baker Motley, Thurgood Marshall and others, the Manning family and the family of Shayron R. Reed filed suit in 1958 to take Hillsborough County to court. The 4 African American parents (Andrew and Willie Manning and Sanders and Sandra Reed) said they were not allowed to send their children to schools in their neighborhood.

In 1962, the federal court said Hillsborough County was operating an illegal segregated school. Desegregation was ordered in 1971 in the Middle District of Florida by Judge Ben Krentzman.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 19, 2 p. m. at Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery. Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of service.

Teen Author Publishes Her First Book

When talking to Camry Moore about her first novel, one would think she is far older than her 15 years. She is one of those rare teenagers whose vivid imagine belies her years.

With the help of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl (Cherrie) Moore, Camry recently published book. Not only is it her first publication, it is her first full-length novel as well.

The novel, entitled “The Sun In Her Eyes,” explores the emotions of teenage love. It talks about a young girl who is unceremoniously dumped by her boyfriend.

The young woman experiences all of the emotions of disappointment and loss of trust. “She is left broken and lost,” the young artist said.

After graduating from Hillsborough High School, the 10th grade honor student plans to attend college in New York.

Mom-To-Be And Cousin Shot At Apartment Complex

According to Tampa Police, a group of people were standing in the parking lot of the Jackson Court Apartment Complex on Sunday when unknown suspects began shooting into the crowd.

Tawanna Williams, 18, and 8-months pregnant, was struck in the lower back and her cousin, James Wade, IV (right), 15, was struck in the leg. Both were transported to local hospitals. Williams is reported to be in stable condition, and according to a family member, Williams gave birth to her baby.

Police said the shooting does not appear to be random.

Celebration Planned For Gospel Singer

This weekend, the family of Mr. Robert Jacobs, Sr., will host a two-day gospel celebration in honor of his 85th birthday.

The celebration for Mr. Robert Jacobs, Sr., will take place at BRYCG Christian Center, 25001 W. Rio Vista Avenue, in Tampa. During the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, Mr. Jacobs continued to sing. In 1974, he formed the Spiritual Revivals, which included Rochester Jacobs, Eugene Jacobs, and Raymond Jacobs, G. Shivers, Tolbert, and others.

Mr. Jacobs has performed with such gospel singers as Shirley Caesar, the Mighty Clouds of Joy, the Blind Boys of Alabama, and others.

His wife, Mrs. Juanita Jacobs, and children, Robert, Jr., Rochester, Noretta Jacobs Shrivers, and Jerome Jacobs, will host Gospel Singing on Saturday, and a Mini Gospel Concert and Anointing Transference Service, on Sunday.

Well- Known Families Lose Their Fathers

This past week, two well known families lost the patriarchs of their families. Both Mr. King David Davenport (right), 88, and Mr. James Rhodes, Jr., 86, died on Sunday.

Mr. James Rhodes, Jr., was the father of Jeffrey Rhodes, co-owner of Ray Williams Funeral Home. His son stated that he attended church at Greater Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a longtime member.

He was at home with his wife, Mrs. Mozelle Rhodes, when he became ill. A retired nurse, Mrs. Rhodes performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Mr. Rhodes died in the Emergency Room at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Mr. Rhodes is survived by his wife; daughter, Mrs. Debbie Griffin; 3 sons, Jeffrey, and Michael Rhodes, and Calvin Bexley, Jr., grandchildren, and other family members, church members, and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Rhodes were incomplete at press time.

The children and grandchildren of Mr. King David Davenport, Sr., were present when he died on Sunday.

Mr. Davenport retired from U. S. Chemical & Phosphate Company, now known as Mosaic Phosphate Company, after nearly 40 years and became active in the Real Estate business.

Mr. Davenport had been ill for over 2 years, but became critical and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of St. Joseph’s Hospital. He is survived by 3 daughters, 6 sons, several grandchildren, other family members and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Davenport were incomplete at press time. Ray Williams Funeral Home is in charge of handling arrangements.

Feds Arrest Woman And Son On Charges

Last week, the U. S. Attorney’s Office arrested a mother for mortgage fraud and her son faces drug charges.

Ms. Maxine Williams-Salter, 61, of St. Petersburg, and her son, Antorrio Williams, 27, of Tampa, were arrested in two separate cases.

According to police, Ms. Williams-Salter was charged with wire fraud related to a mortgage application and loan. If convicted, she could face up to 20 years in federal prison.

According to the indictment, in October, 2007, Ms. Williams-Salter devised a scheme and to defraud SunTrust Mortgage for a mortgage loan in the amount of $382,500 to purchase a second home at 5404 Reflections Blvd., Lutz.

Drug Charges
In a separate incident, Antorrio Williams was indicted on conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 1,000 kilograms or more of marijuana.

According to the indictment, Williams conspired with others, from 2001 until November 2010, to possess with intent to distribute 1,000 kilograms or more of marijuana in Pinellas County.

If convicted on the charge, Williams faces a minimum mandatory penalty of 20 years in federal prison.

Suspect On Video Charged With Murder

After an extensive interview Monday, Tampa Police have charged Jason Smith, 30, with first-degree murder.

Police said Smith was the man seen on surveillance footage getting out of a vehicle, walking over to the vehicle of Michael Smith Ayuso, 39, and shooting him to death.

The incident occurred Sunday evening when Smith, the passenger in a vehicle, pulled into the parking lot of a business at Kentucky Avenue and Florida Avenue. Police said Smith waited 21 minutes for Ayuso’s vehicle to arrive in the area.

A surveillance camera of a nearby business captured the shooting.  Detectives said Smith identified himself as the person in the video, and witnesses also identified Smith and placed him at the scene of the crime.
