‘LOVE IN ACTION’ TO ASSIST CHURCH DEVASTATED BY FLOOD

            Ministers, pastors and members of the Tampa Bay Community came out to display ‘love in action’ for an East Tampa church recently devastated by flood waters. Reverend Timothy Kemp shared with the community how the basement of his church, Peace Progressive Primitive Baptist Church, was heavily damaged by flood waters in August. A benefit to assist the church was held at St. John Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Bartholomew Banks, pastor. The guest speaker was Rev. Dr. Evan Burrows, pastor of First Baptist Church of College Hill. The First Baptist Church of College Hill Mass Choir gave musical selections. Among those in attendance from left to right: Rev. INVESTITURE CEREMONY HELD FOR JUDGE JULIE SIMONE SNEED

            On Friday, September 18^th, family members, friends, and fellow judges gathered for the Investiture Ceremony of the Honorable U. S. Magistrate Julie Simone Sneed. The Investiture Ceremony was held at the Sam M. Gibbons United States Courthouse. Her husband, Dr. Kevin Sneed, Dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of South Florida, held the Bible during the ceremony while their two children observed the procedure. Judge James Whittemore administered the Oath of Office at the Swearing-In Ceremony. U. S. Magistrate Sneed is assigned to the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida. Those on hand for the historical event included 25 members of the Tampa Chapter of Links, Inc., who presented U. S. Magistrate Sneed with a dozen roses. Shown in this photograph, she was joined by U. She is now the third African American female assigned to the Middle District of Florida.

FUNDRAISER FOR SAUNDERS LIBRARY FEATURES MALCOLM X’S DAUGHTER

            The Greater Tampa Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. in partnership with the Robert W. Saunders Foundation hosted a gala at the new library recently featuring the daughter of Malcolm X as the speaker. Earlier in the day, Ilyasah Shabazz addressed an audience of 5^th and 6^th graders on the book she has written about her father, “Malcolm Little: The Boy Who Grew Up To Become Malcolm X.”

            Later in the evening the gala was held at the library. CDC OF TAMPA, INC. HOSTS ITS 23^RD ANNIVERSARY LUNCHEON

            On Tuesday, September 29^th, members of the CDC of Tampa, Inc., (Corporation to Develop Communities of Tampa, Inc.), hosted their 23^rd Annual Luncheon. The theme for the event was, “Paving Pathways From Poverty To Prosperity.” The luncheon was held at TPepin’s Hospitality Centre, 4121 North 50^th Street. Donald L. Maxwell, former President of the Community Development Corporation of Kansas City, Missouri, delivered the Keynote Address. MOUNT TABOR M. B. CHURCH CELEBRATES 93^rd ANNIVERSARY

            On Sunday, September 20^th, members of Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church celebrated its 93^rd Anniversary. Reverend T. D. Leonard is the Senior Pastor. Elder Phillip Hall delivered the Divine Message during the 11 a.m. service. Sister Helen Thompson extended the Welcome and the Occasion was given by Sister Natoya Roseboro. Pastor Leonard extended the Invitation to Discipleship. Sister Belinda Jefferson, Chairperson of the Anniversary Program, extended Words of Thanks. NATIONAL BAPTIST CONVENTION Of AMERICA, INTERNATIONAL, INC. HELD

Members of the National Baptist Convention of America, Inc., recently held their Annual Convention at Innisbrook Golf & Spa Resort, in Palm Harbor. The Convention, which took place September 13^th through September 18^th, drew participants from throughout the United States. Rev. Dr. Bartholomew Banks, President of New Progressive M & E Baptist Sate Convention of Florida, hosted the event. GALA LUNCH RECEPTION AND HONORARY AWARDS CEREMONY HELD

            On September 12^th, members of the community gathered at the Robert W. Saunders, Sr., Public Library to attend a Gala Lunch Reception and Honorary Awards Ceremony. Joseph Lundy, founder of Master of Achievement Leadership and Excellence (M.A.L.E.), Inc., was among the honorees. The theme for the gathering was “Being the Best M.A.L.E. FICTIONAL, HISTORICAL PLAY DEBUTS

On the weekend of September 11^th, the fictional, historical play, “Six Triple Eight,” made its debut at the Hillsborough Community College Theater. Recently chosen as the winner at the Tampa Bay Theater Festival, “Six Triple Eight” focuses on the fictional first African American female battalion as it arrives in Europe and their seemingly impossible assignment. The play was written and directed by Mary McCallum.             On Saturday, September 12^th, family and friends of Ms. Theresa Manuel held an appreciation banquet in her honor. The elaborate event was held at the DoubleTree, By The Hilton, 4500 W. Cypress. The theme of the grand affair was, “An Evening In Shades Of Blue.” Ms. Manuel became the first African American woman from Florida to represent the United States at the Olympics in 1948 in Track & Field. Ms. Manuel, 89, retired from the Hillsborough County School District after 38 years of service as an educator. The Master of Ceremony for the event was Kevin D. Lofton, of the CDC of Tampa, Inc., The Honorable Doretha Edgecomb, Hillsborough County School Board Vice Chairperson, was the Keynote Speaker. Ms. Manuel is shown seated.
