SEVERAL PROFESSIONALS ADDRESS ATHLETES AT ‘SUCCESS YOUTH LUNCHEON’
Moffitt Cancer Center hosted a Success Youth Luncheon for several middle and high school athletes on October 24, 2015. The luncheon featured such professionals as the Honorable U. S. District Judge for the Middle District of Florida, Mary Scriven and her husband, Atty. RETIRED NFL PLAYER PRESENTS GOLDEN FOOTBALL TO MIDDLETON HIGH SCHOOL
On Wednesday, retired NFL player Ll0yd Mumphord made a special visit to his alma mater, Middleton High School. Mumphord addressed the football players and the highlight of his visit was the presentation of the Wilson Golden Football. The presentation of the football, which is inscribed with Mumphord’s name and that of the school, in part of the upcoming events surrounding the NFL 50th Super Bowl Celebration. NFL players who participated in a Super Bowl are visiting their high schools and presenting the school with a Golden Football. Mumphord graduated from Middleton High School with the class of 1965. FORUM ON LAW ENFORCEMENT ENCOUNTERS HELD
Recently, members of the Black Law Student Association of the Western Michigan University, Cooley Law School, hosted a forum about encounters with law enforcement. The event was held at Middleton High School, and the theme was “Responding to A Law Enforcement Encounter.” The panelists included representatives from law enforcement and the judicial system. Its purpose was to offer advice to keep students, parents, other members of the community, and the police officers safe during a variety of law enforcement encounters. PLANS UNDERWAY FOR 7TH ANNUAL TREE LIGHTING CELEBRATION
Plans are underway for the East Tampa Community Partnership’s Aesthetics and Beautification Committee’s 7th Annual Community Tree Lighting Celebration. The event will be held on Friday, December 12, 2015, at Cyrus Greene Recreation Center. The community is asked to come out at 3 p. m. and enjoy vendors, bounce house, face painting, finger printing and other activities. Program and entertainment begins at 5:30 p. m. Registered guests will receive a ticket that will be used after the 7 p. m. program that will enter them in a drawing which includes give-aways, such as holiday food boxes, gift certificates, TV and many more items. AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH 75th SESSION FEATURES YPD CONFERENCE
The Westcoast Conference of the 11th District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) held its 75th Session in Tampa last month. Allen Temple AME Church, Dr. David Green, Senior Pastor, was the host church. One of the sessions held before services began on October 20th was by the Young People’s Department (YPD). It was held on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at Allen Temple. Young People from the Episcopal District were in town for the service. FIRE CHIEF HONORED AT ANNUAL
NAACP FREEDOM FUND BANQUET
Recently, more than 400 guests attended the Annual NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet, hosted by the Hillsborough County Branch NAACP. The gala took place at the Embassy Suites Hotel on Spectrum Blvd. The theme for this year is “Pursuing Liberty in the Face of Injustice.” The Freedom Fund Banquet is the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year. Bennie Small is the President. GRAND OPENING CEREMONY FOR THE REED AT ENCORE
The Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for The Reed at Encore was held on Monday, October 26, 2015. The building is named for longtime Central Park Village resident, Essie Mae Reed. It is the second and last building in the complex for senior citizens. Mrs. Reed passed away September 12, 2014. Several members of Mrs. Reed’s family joined the celebration along with representatives from the Tampa Housing Authority and U. S. Congresswoman Kathy Castor.
