STUDENTS LEARN EARLY HOW TO BECOME ENTREPRENEURS
Walters Academy for Entrepreneurship (WAE) was launched in the community recently. Students in grades 5-12th are students at the school. The goal of the school is to teach youngsters how to become business owners at an early age. Multiple classes are built into the school day for not only the traditional classes, but classes that will enable students to own a business when they finish high school. INDUCTION CEREMONY HELD FOR NEW GIRLS CLUB AT MIDDLETON HIGH
An induction ceremony was held last week for a group of girls at Middleton Senior High School, a Pre-Collegiate STEM Academy. The group is called Ladies of Distinction. The vision of Ladies of Distinction is to promote high scholastic attainment and empowerment through mentorship, leadership and service. The group was founded last school term, but just recently held its induction ceremony. A SPECIAL 90th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION FOR MRS. MARY MITCHELL
Family and friends joined Mrs. Mary Mitchell on her 90th birthday, Friday, August 26, 2016, at the Egypt Shrine Temple for a special birthday celebration. Family members traveled from near and far to help her celebrate. Congresswoman Kathy Castor and her husband made a surprise visit to share the celebration. She received a proclamation and photograph from President Barack Obama, gifts and best wishes from those who attended. KICK-OFF RECEPTION FOR HILLSBOROUGH MENTAL HEALTH RUN/WALK
The Hillsborough County National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) held a kick-off reception on August 25, 2016 for its First Annual NAMI Hillsborough 3K Walk/Run, to be held October 8th. The reception was held at the Michael Murphy Gallery on S. MacDill Ave. The kick-off event recognized the 3K Walk/Run sponsors and honored guests – Lenorea La Peter Anton, Michael Braga and Anthony Cormier. TAMPA POLICE DEPARTMENT HOLDS CONVERSATIONS WITH THE COMMUNITY
The Tampa Police Department held three community events, entitled “Conversations With The Community,” one event in each district. The final session was held in District III on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at Cyrus Greene Community Center. Organizers of the events say the event were very successful, with participation from the residents. Among the organizers in attendance at the District III event were: Maj. R. R. FORMER PRESIDENT MEETS WITH LOCAL LEADERS
Recently, former U. S. President William (Bill) Clinton visited Tampa and met with community leaders, elected officials, and members of the faith-based community. The meeting took place at Ragan Park Community Center, 1200 E. Lake Avenue, on Tuesday, August 23rd. Reverend Dr. Bartholomew Banks, Senior Pastor of St. John Progressive Missionary Baptist Church gave the invocation. He was in town campaigning for his wife, U. S. Presidential Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. He spoke about her commitment to build an economy that would be beneficial for everyone. BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB STEP TEAM WINS FIRST PLACE
A few days before the students in Hillsborough County Public Schools returned to the classroom, the Wilbert Davis Boys and Girls Club hosted a talent showcase. Among the participants were other Boys and Girls Clubs, after school programs and rec centers. After an afternoon of stepping and dancing on July 28th, the Star Divas Step Team of the Wilbert Davis Club won the first place trophy. Their coach is Felteena Williams, who is also the club director. Team members on the front row are: Dzaria, Jalissa and Jarielys. DRESS FOR SUCCESS CEO KATIE MCGILL HONORED AT APPRECIATION PROGRAM
Clients of Dress For Success hosted an Appreciation Program for Ms. Katie McGill, CEO of Dress For Success. Going against her belief “that we shouldn’t be rewarded for what we’re supposed to do,” the clients invited her family and several agency representatives to be a part of the program. The appreciation program was held on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at T-Pepin Entertainment. Former Police Chief Jane Castor was the speaker.
