A small group of African American business owners, present and past elected officials had breakfast at the Open Café on Tuesday morning with Joe Lopano, Chief Executive Officer of Tampa International Airport. During his first year, TIA has netted a $2 million profit; added two international flights to Cuba and Switzerland; and will be managing major renovations and overall expansion. Recently, members of Greater Bethel Missionary Baptist Church hosted its Annual Christmas Celebration Program. This year, church members featured a skit entitled “The King Is Coming” during the program. Mrs. Marion Jones, a Tampa hair stylist, produced and directed the performance. To learn more about their interest in Journalism, students from Girls Preparatory Academy A. J. Ferrell Middle Magnet School took a field trip on Thursday morning that brought them to the Sentinel. They were accompanied by their teacher and the Media Specialist. Sentinel Publisher, S. Kay Andrews took the 6 young ladies throughout the business, where they met staff, learned the duties of each, saw the equipment in operation and asked questions. On Friday, December 9th, the Tampa-Hillsborough County Human Rights Council hosted their 38th Annual Human Rights Awards Breakfast. The event was held at the DoubleTree Hotel on Cypress. The Council paid tribute to several individuals who courageously traveled by bus and train through the southern states to integrate public spaces 50 years ago. Approximately 600 females from area middle and high schools were in attendance on Wednesday in the auditorium at Middleton High School for the original performance of “Black Girl Speaks.” Students from Middleton, Blake and Hillsborough High Schools and Ferrell Middle School were in attendance. “Black Girl Speaks” is a performance by Talitha Anyabwele, CEO and Artistic Director of BGS Productions, Inc. The purpose of the performance is to empower young women. For the 25th consecutive year, Donatello’s Restaurant has closed its door to the public on Thanksgiving Day to provide a sumptuous meal for many less fortunate children who may not be able to get a traditional Thanksgiving meal. With the assistance of several adults, more than 900 young people were served the traditional meal with all the trimmings. The Pi Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Fraternity, Inc. held its 2011 Achievement Awards Presentation on Sunday, November 13, 2011. The group worshipped with their fraternity brother, Rev.
