Say Hey! Willie Mays Celebrates 80th Birthday

Say Hey! Willie Mays Celebrates 80th Birthday

SAN FRANCISCO – The Say Hey Kid is as popular as ever.

The San Francisco Giants honored Willie Mays on his 80th birthday Friday night with a ceremony befitting a baseball legend, complete with a celebratory letter from President Barack Obama and a video tribute that included everyone from Commissioner Bud Selig to singer Tony Bennett.

Mays was driven on a golf cart from center field to the mound and received a roaring standing ovation from a sellout crowd of more than 42,000 at AT&T Park. At one point during the montage, Mays was wiping his face and pulling down his old Giants cap.

“I’m just so happy,’” said Mays, wearing a black coat over a sharp gray suit, white shirt and orange tie on a chilly night by the bay. “When you have people like you guys to come out and cheer for me, it’s just a wonderful, wonderful feeling.”

The video shown on the center-field scoreboard before the Giants rallied to beat the Colorado Rockies 4-3 in the opener of a three-game series highlighted the Hall of Famer’s career. It also included birthday wishes from Hank Aaron, Bill Cosby and former President Bill Clinton.

Home Run King Barry Bonds, the godson of Mays, had a seperate video played after the fifth inning thanking Mays for his guidance over the years. Bonds, fresh off a federal perjury trial in which a jury convicted him on one count of obstruction of justice, said it has been “an honor for me and my family to be a part of your life.”

Former USF Star NFL Player Visits Tampa Park Football Team

BY LEON B. CREWS
Sentinel Staff Writer

Last week, former University of South Florida defensive end, George Selvie (currently with the St. Louis Rams), joined his former Bulls teammate, Richard Clebert (#71 with the Tampa Bay Storm).

The two met at Tampa Park at the invitation of Clebert who is president of the Tampa Park Titans Youth Football Team.

Selvie spoke to the players, motivating them to never give up on their dreams and never allow anyone to tell them what they can or cannot do.

Selvie talked to the kids about his own experiences coming out of high school, and how he had only one Division I scholarship offer, and that was to USF.

“It was in my heart to prove to everyone who passed up on me that I could play Division I football.”

At USF, Selvie broke all the defensive line records and made All-American all four years he played at USF. He was later drafted in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams.

“If I had left my sophomore or junior year, I would have been a top ten pick,” said Selvie. “But, I chose to stay in school and do what I promised my mother I’d do, and that’s graduate.”

Selvie told the kids that money will always be there and for them to make sure they get their education and listen to their parents.

Heat’s Bosh Sues Ex-Girlfriend Over Reality Show

Heat’s Bosh Sues Ex-Girlfriend Over Reality Show

LOS ANGELES — Miami Heat star Chris Bosh is suing the mother of his child for appearing on a reality TV show called “Basketball Wives,” which he said intrudes on his private life.

Bosh claims in a lawsuit filed Monday in Los Angeles federal court that Allison Mathis and Shed Media are trying to unjustly enrich themselves by using Bosh’s name and intruding into his private affairs.

He acknowledges he and Mathis have a child together.

The suit says Mathis was hired to appear in the third season of the VH1 reality show and wants to use it to become a TV star. Bosh seeks damages and an injunction to block her and the media company from trademark infringement by using his name and disclosing private facts about his life.

“Though the reality television show is titled, ‘Basketball Wives,’ the featured women in the show are not the current wives of NBA players,” the lawsuit says. “Instead, the show follows the lives of women who are dating or who dated NBA basketball players or who were formerly married to NBA players. “

It says the show, “provides these women with a vehicle and worldwide platform” to use the names of players without permission for commercial gain.

Rose Wins MVP

Rose Wins MVP

CHICAGO — Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose is the NBA’s MVP, becoming the youngest player in league history to win the award.

The news is hardly a surprise.

Rose is the second Bulls player to win the MVP, but has a ways to go before he catches Michael Jordan, who won five – but he sure is off to a good start. In his third year, the dynamic point guard led the Bulls to their best season since the JordanScottie Pippen championship era.

He ended the two-year MVP reign of LeBron James.

A product of Chicago’s South Side, Rose continued his impressive rise this season.

He established himself as one of the top players in the league after going from Rookie of the Year to an All-Star in his first two seasons with one of the best all-around performances by a point guard.

He averaged 25 points and 7.7 assists while leading Chicago into championship contention.

Griffin Wins ROY

Griffin Wins ROY

LOS ANGELES — Blake Griffin played his entire rookie season like a man making up for lost time.

Now that the Los Angeles Clippers’ dynamic dunker has been named the league’s top rookie in a landslide, he’s already thinking about ways to improve on a delayed NBA debut that was well worth the wait.

Griffin accepted the Rookie of the Year award on Wednesday, becoming the NBA’s first unanimous choice for the award in 21 years.

The No. 1 overall draft pick out of Oklahoma in 2009 missed all of the 2009-10 season after breaking his kneecap in the Clippers’ final preseason game. But Griffin returned with one of the most impressive debut campaigns in a generation. Griffin frequently thought back to that season in limbo while picking up his award during a party at the Clippers’ training complex.
