Big D: Mavericks Top Heat 105-95 For NBA Title

Big D: Mavericks Top Heat 105-95 For NBA Title

MIAMI — For Dirk Nowitzki, the resume is complete. He’s an NBA champion.

For LeBron James, the agonizing wait continues for at least one more year.

A season that began with Miami celebrating the signings of James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh – along with the promise of championships – ended on the very same floor, with the Dallas Mavericks hoisting the title trophy for the first time in their franchise history after beating the Heat 105-95 on Sunday night. The Mavericks won four of the series’ last five games, a turnabout that could not have been sweeter.

“I really still can’t believe it,” said Nowitzki, who had 21 points and took home finals MVP honors.

He and Jason Terry, who led the Mavs with 27 points, were the two remaining players from the Dallas team that lost to Miami in the 2006 finals.

Plaxico Two Years In Prison Took ‘An Emotional Toll’

NEW YORK – Plaxico Burress wants another chance to play in the NFL.

The former New York Giants wide receiver said in a story posted Friday that spending nearly two years in prison on a gun charge took “an emotional toll.” He was released Monday from Oneida Correctional Facility in New York.

Burress said “there’s nothing pleasant about prison,” from the food to the meager weight room to the wasted time.

Burress said he wants a clean slate now and plans to “get right back into it” with workouts beginning next week.

His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has said he expects several NFL teams to have interest in Burress once the lockout ends and teams resume doing business with players.

Tyson, Stallone Inducted Into Int’l Boxing Hall Of Fame

CANASTOTA, N.Y. — The once-proclaimed “baddest man on the planet” fumbled for words that wouldn’t come. Sylvester Stallone knew exactly what Mike Tyson was feeling.

Both were inducted in the International Boxing Hall of Fame on Sunday, Tyson for his reign as heavyweight champion of the world, Stallone for his “Rocky” movie series.

Thousands packed every corner of the induction grounds, and Tyson was no match for the emotion of the moment.

“I’ve got to be goofy about this or I’ll get emotional up here,” Tyson warned before trying to honor the late trainer Cus D’Amato, who became his legal guardian after Tyson’s mother died and taught him the finer points of the sweet science in a gym in Catskill, N.Y., just a 2-1/2-hour drive from the Hall of Fame.

Tennessee Titans WR Kenny Britt Arrested

Tennessee Titans WR Kenny Britt Arrested

NEWARK, N.J.– Tennessee Titans wide receiver, Kenny Britt was arrested  in New Jersey, a day after appearing in court for a previous arrest on traffic charges.

Police said the former Rutgers star was charged with resisting arrest after two plainclothes officers suspected he was carrying a marijuana cigar and attempted to handcuff him.

The detectives from the city’s vice squad, were in line to pay at the car wash when they allegedly detected an odor of marijuana, and one officer noticed Britt allegedly holding a brown, rolled cigar they believed to be the source.

Both detectives identified themselves as police, and attempted to handcuff Britt, who allegedly tried to wrestle free and push away while attempting to crush the cigar in his fist. Police believe a man who was with Britt may have disposed of the cigar in the scuffle as police wrestled Britt to the floor and handcuffed him; the other man has not been charged.

Britt is charged with obstructing the administration of the law, resisting arrest and tampering with or fabricating evidence. Police did not recover the cigar or find any drugs on Britt, and he has not been charged with any drug-related offenses. Britt was released on his own recognizance, according to police, and has a June 16 court date.

Britt pleaded guilty Tuesday to separate motor vehicle violations related to an April arrest on speeding charges in his hometown of Bayonne.

Carl Lewis Wins NJ Senate Dem Primary

Carl Lewis Wins NJ Senate Dem Primary

NEW JERSEY — Nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis has won an uncontested Democratic primary in a New Jersey state Senate race.

He still has legal hurdles ahead before he can appear on the general election ballot in November against incumbent Republican state Sen. Dawn Marie Addiego.

A judge may still keep him off the general election ballot. Republicans say he doesn’t meet New Jersey’s four-year residency requirement.

A federal court ruled Lewis should stay on the primary ballot while the dispute is being sorted out.

The 49-year-old track and field star grew up in Willingboro and has spent much of his adult life in California. He’s owned homes in New Jersey since 2005 but continued to vote in California until he registered in New Jersey in April.
