Adrian Peterson, the Minnesota Vikings running back, has pledged to donate $1 million to the Oklahoma athletics department.

The largest financial gift ever to the athletic department from a former Sooners football player will help support construction of Headington Hall, a student housing facility, and establish the Adrian Peterson Football Scholarship Endowment.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. —Former NFL star Warren Sapp owes more than $6.7 million to creditors and back child support and alimony, according to a Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing in South Florida.

The court documents were filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Fort Lauderdale on March 30.

Sapp’s average monthly income is $115,881, according to the filings, and includes $45,000 for a final contract payment with Showtime, $48,000 for an appearance with CCA Sports and $18,675 as an advance for a book deal. His contract with the NFL Network ends in August, the filings show, and it was unknown if the contract will be renewed.

Sapp, a former defensive tackle for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders during his 13-year NFL career, was also once a contestant on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.”

REPORT: SAPP ‘LIKELY’ OUT AT NFL NETWORK

When former NFL defensive tackle Warren Sapp recently declared bankruptcy, he listed his income at $45,000 per month from NFL Network on a contract that expires in August 2012. Sapp said in the paperwork he’s not sure if the contract will be extended.

According to Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe, it probably won’t be.

Bedard reports, citing two league sources, that Sapp’s employment is “likely over,” and that Sapp has not been on NFL Network in the two-plus weeks since he went on the air and outed former Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey as the player who blew the whistle on the Saints’ bounty system in 2011.

Serena gained a title, Venus found a renewed belief in her game and both showed a calm confidence at the Family Circle Cup.

Serena capped a dominant week with a powerful performance in the finals Sunday, defeating Lucie Safarova 6-0, 6-1 to win the championship. It was Serena Williams’ 40th career tournament title and her first win on clay since taking this event in 2008.

Sister Venus has similar hopes. The 31-year-old star and seven-time grand slam winner was playing just her second tournament since an autoimmune disease— Sjogren’s syndrome—kept her sidelined for more than six months.

Venus Williams reached the quarterfinals in her return, showing off some solid tennis of her own in her first clay-court event in two years. Venus nearly made it to the semifinals, missing out on her first matchup with Serena since 2009 when Samantha Stosur rallied to win.

Then Serena got a bit of sisterly revenge, ousting Stosur in dominating 6-1, 6-1 fashion.

LOS ANGELES — Torii Hunter was visited at his home by police officers with guns drawn after he accidentally triggered the alarm upon returning from the Los Angeles Angels’ final exhibition game on Wednesday.

Two Newport Beach police officers entered the house in the afternoon and escorted Hunter upstairs with guns drawn so the right fielder could retrieve his identification.

The incident began when Hunter triggered the home’s alarm. A dispatcher called his wife’s cell phone, but she was in Texas and didn’t answer. Hunter struck out in his only at-bat in the Angels’ exhibition at Dodger Stadium, then left for his Orange County home.

Darryl Williams said his life’s story doesn’t differ much from many young black males these days.

While attending Plant High School, Williams was an outstanding baseball player in 2005 and 2006. When he graduated in 2007, he hoped a professional team would show some interest in him, but nothing ever materialized.

“I think mistakes I made in the past cost me opportunities now.”

Williams said he’s joined the Tampa Bay Adult-Wood Bat League with hopes of getting the attention of scouts.

“I went to a Yankee Scouting combine 3 weeks ago, and they told me I needed more experience. All I’m asking for is an opportunity to try out for a team.

“I have some family members who have played professional baseball, like Michael Burgess, and I want to get an opportunity to prove I still have what it takes.

Williams said although he’s primarily an outfielder, he can also play center field, and left field.

Five-time All-Star Reggie Miller and longtime coach Don Nelson are among a dozen players, coaches and teams that will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

The class of 2012 was announced Monday in New Orleans, the site of the Final Four.

Also elected were two-time Olympic gold medalist Katrina McClain, three-time college player of the year Ralph Sampson, four-time NBA champion, Jamaal Wilkes, longtime referee Hank Nichols, and the All-American Red Heads, the female version of the Harlem Globetrotters.

Five members of the class had already been announced: Nike co-founder Phil Knight, ABA star Mel Daniels, seven-time NBA All-Star, Chet Walker,

Olympian Don Barksdale and Lydija Alexeeva, who led the Soviet Union to two Olympic gold medals.

The class will be inducted Sept. 7 at the Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

Hank Aaron, one of baseball’s greatest players, may be coming to theaters soon.

The rights to his story were recently bought up by producers Mike Tollin and Glenn Rigberg. Tollin previously produced a documentary on Aaron’s life in 1995, Hank Aaron: Chasing the Dream.

The film will be based on the biography The Last Hero: The Life Story of Henry Aaron by Howard Bryant.

“This was a difficult time in my life,” said Aaron, “but I’m confident we can all learn a little something from looking back at those times.” Aaron ended the 1973 season one home run shy of the record, finally eclipsing Ruth’s mark with his 715th home run on April 8, 1974.

Detroit Lions second-year running back, Mikel Leshoure is facing felony marijuana possession charges after a March 12 traffic stop outside of Benton Harbor. This is his second drug-related offense in less than a month.

Leshoure, a 2011 second round pick by the Lions out of the University of Illinois, missed his entire rookie season with a torn Achilles tendon. He was first arrested on Feb. 18.

He was the passenger in a rented SUV that was pulled over for an improper lane change. According to the police report. Leshoure was caught “chewing marijuana” and marijuana spilled down the front of his shirt.

“He was cooperative,” the Police Chief said, “We told him to spit (the weed) out so he wouldn’t get sick, and he did.” Officers said that Leshoure initially admitted to smoking weed before the traffic stop, but tried to say that the substance in his mouth was not marijuana, but potpourri.

MOBILE, Ala. — Detroit Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley was arrested Tuesday in Alabama on a charge of possessing marijuana, authorities said.

Citizens called to complain that Fairley’s Cadillac Escalade was speeding through a lower-middle class neighborhood in Mobile. Officers smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle and found a small amount in an ashtray.

Fairley and a passenger were booked into Mobile’s metro jail facility on a misdemeanor marijuana possession. Fairley was released a short time later on $1,000 bail.
