SAN FRANCISCO — It has been slightly more than nine years since prosecutors and grand jurors alike grilled a defiant Barry Bonds for hours about his relationship with performance enhancing drugs.

The Major League Baseball career leader in homeruns is asking the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to toss out his felony conviction. Bonds’ lawyers claim his answer was not material to the grand jury that was investigating the illegal distribution of performance-enhancing drugs.

PHILADELPHIA — Michael Vick took a significant pay cut to stay with the Philadelphia Eagles and compete for a starting job.

The four-time Pro Bowl quarterback agreed Monday to a restructured three-year contract with the Eagles, just two seasons after signing a $100 million extension that included $35.5 million in guaranteed money. The new deal is essentially for one-year, however.

Vick could earn up to $10 million in 2013 if he meets all his performance incentives, and the team will void the remaining two years on March 15. Vick was slated to earn about $16 million next season, including a $3 million roster bonus. He lost his starting job to rookie Nick Foles last season, but new coach Chip Kelly will give him a chance to win it back.

PITTSBURGH — Steelers linebacker James Harrison is willing to restructure his contract, which is set to pay him $6.57 million this season and $7.57 million in 2014. But he won’t take a pay cut, his agent said.

“Can we help the Steelers by restructuring James’ contract? We’re certainly willing to do that,” agent Bill Parise said. “Do we need to take less money? I don’t think so. Personally, I think he’s a bargain.” That stance could lead to Harrison’s release.

Harrison turns 35 in May and is coming off a season in which he had 70 tackles and six sacks. The five-time Pro Bowler missed the first three games while recovering from knee surgery.

Baltimore Ravens star wide receiver Anquan Boldin indicated on Friday that he will retire if the team cuts him this offseason.

Boldin has one year remaining on his current four-year, $25 million contract. After failing to crack the 1,000-yard plateau in his third straight year with the Ravens, the three-time Pro Bowler came on strong in the postseason.

In the Ravens’ run to Super Bowl XLVII victory, Boldin snagged 22 passes for 380 yards in four games. His four postseason touchdowns—which included the first one in the big game—matched his total for the entire regular season.

Baltimore has $15.7 million in cap space, but the team has several needs to address. Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco is negotiating a long-term contract and should be among the highest-paid signal-callers in the NFL after his own remarkable playoff stretch.

The defense has several key players who will also demand paydays, with Paul Kruger, Dannell Ellerbe and Ed Reed set to hit free agency. The emergence of speedy WR Torrey Smith and Super Bowl hero Jacoby Jones also hurts Boldin’s cause to remain a Raven, as does the likely re-signing of young, dynamic TE Dennis Pitta.

The free-agent market would likely be kind to Boldin after his recent dominant play, but the 32-year-old seems set on remaining with his current team or hanging up the cleats.

Champ Bailey is reportedly going to remain with the Denver Broncos through this offseason.

Mike Klis of the wrote on his Sulia account that Bailey isn’t likely to be going anywhere. He also said as much on Twitter.

Almost immediately upon entering the league with the Washington Redskins, Bailey was a great player. The 34-year-old has long been the best corner in the league and will go down as one of the best shutdown cornerbacks in the history of the league. Over his 14-year career, Bailey’s made 12 Pro Bowls, seven All-Pro teams and intercepted 52 passes.

Chad Johnson is being sued by for bringing shame to a coconut water company. Zico Beverages has taken legal action against the former NFL player claiming that his well-publicized relationship issues has given them negative press.

Johnson signed to the company a few months before he was arrested for head-butting ex-wife, Evelyn Lozada. The couple got into an argument in early August, which turned physical. Police arrested Johnson, and released him the next day. Zico fired him within days of the altercation, setting off a firestorm of other pinks slips. Within weeks he was let go from the Miami Dolphins, and had his reality show with Lozada canned by VH1.

Delanie Walker’s team may have lost the Super Bowl, but Wednesday Walker’s Twitter followers learned the tight end was dealing with something far worse – the loss of family.

Walker tweeted that his aunt and uncle, Alice and Bryan Young, were killed Monday morning following the Super Bowl by a drunk driver. Multiple reports indicate the driver of the vehicle Necole Thomas, 26, was able to “escape the accident with minor injuries.” The crash occurred around 5:30 a.m. Monday. Louisiana State Police said Thomas was driving at a “high rate of speed” and hit the back of the car Alice and Bryan Young were in.

Alice and Bryan Young’s son, DeAndre Williams, said that his parents were “great people.” Williams, who is Walker’s cousin, said his parents attended the Super Bowl as guests.

SANTA CLARA, CA — Still steaming over the Super Bowl loss, Colin Kaepernick packed up his belongings in the 49ers locker room and made plans with teammates to work out this offseason.

They won’t have to wait long.

Kaepernick said Tuesday that he’ll be training in Atlanta within a week, and the strong-armed and fleet-footed quarterback will be bringing some of his receivers along with him. All of it is part of Kaepernick’s quick evolution from backup to starter that will continue as he enters training camp as the unquestioned franchise star.

ATLANTA – Basketball legend Magic Johnson is spearheading a nationwide apprenticeship campaign to motivate and develop the careers of young people. Johnson, alongside hip-hop artist Common and BET boss Debra Lee, have joined forces with Coca-Cola to serve as mentors.

All three celebrities will give youngsters, between the ages of 16 and 21, the opportunity to shadow them and their teams for a week during summer.
