PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have released linebacker James Harrison after the team and the hard-hitting defensive star who played on two Super Bowl champions failed to agree on a new contract. The Steelers made the announcement Saturday.

Pittsburgh general manager Kevin Colbert said in a statement that ‘’James has been an integral part of our success during his years in Pittsburgh and has helped us win two Lombardi trophies during that time. We appreciate all of his efforts and wish him the best.’‘

Harrison was voted AP’s NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2008 after setting a team record with 16 sacks. The five-time Pro Bowl player has the longest interception return in Super Bowl history, a 100-yarder for a score against the Arizona Cardinals in 2009.

As the May 4 fight date steadily inches closer, the fathers of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Robert Guerrero have started their own quarrel in the press, badmouthing one another and threatening physical violence against each other.

After Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs) said how sweet it will be to beat Mayweather, Jr. (43-0, 26 KOs) with Mayweather, Sr. back in his corner via social media, Floyd, Sr. took offense to the statement and issued a warning to Guerrero and his father, Ruben Guerrero.

PYONGYANG, North Korea— Flamboyant former NBA star Dennis Rodman is heading to North Korea with VICE media company — tattoos, piercings, bad-boy reputation and all. The American known as “The Worm” is set to arrive Tuesday in Pyongyang, becoming an unlikely ambassador for sports diplomacy at a time of heightened tensions between the U.S. and North Korea.

Rodman, three members of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team, a VICE correspondent and a production crew from the company are visiting North Korea to shoot footage for a new TV show set to air on HBO in early April, VICE said in an exclusive interview before the group’s departure from Beijing.

MOUND CITY, Ill. — An Illinois prosecutor says he won’t pursue charges that Chicago Bears offensive lineman J’Marcus Webb had marijuana in his vehicle during a traffic stop.

Pulaski County State’s Attorney Grayson Gile says the drug charges related to Webb’s arrest Sunday night have been dropped. Gile says the case lends itself to a “fair and equitable” resolution. J’Marcus Webb has started at both left tackle and right tackle for the Bears.

Authorities say a deputy stopped Webb for speeding on Interstate 57 in Pulaski County, in far southern Illinois along the Ohio River. Webb was freed Monday on bond.

The New York Jets did not meet with the agents for cornerback Darrelle Revis during the 2013 scouting combine, but they were “actively” shopping the three-time All-Pro to other teams.

According to Myers, interested clubs are now investigating what it might cost them in terms of draft choice compensation and a new contract for Revis, who is scheduled to earn $6 million in cash compensation, including a $3 million base salary, in the final season of a four-year, $46 million “band aid” contract he signed toward the end of 2010 training camp.

Jets first-year general manager John Idzik and returning head coach Rex Ryan have stated that they want Revis on the team, but would always discuss options on any player if a deal would improve their team.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will enter this year’s NFL draft with uncertainty about its starting cornerback and safety. The Bucs have not met with 37-year-old safety Ronde Barber (pictured), who will be entering his 17th season.

They also have not made a decision on what to do with cornerback Eric Wright, who missed games due to injuries and a suspension for Adderall use last year that took away the guarantee on his $7.5 million 2013 salary. The team is looking at several options for Wright, including cutting him, cut him and re-signing him to a more favorable contract and holding on to him and hoping he’s more reliable in 2013 and beyond.

The New York Jets will try to restructure wide receiver Santonio Holmes’ contract to create more cap room. Holmes has a base salary of $11 million next season and a cap figure of $12.5 million ($7.5 million guaranteed).

Holmes played in just four games in 2012. The 28-year-old was limited to four games because of a foot injury. He had 20 receptions for 272 yards and a touchdown in 2012.

Last week the Jets cut veteran linebackers Calvin Pace and Bart Scott, offensive tackle Jason Smith and safety Eric Smith to get under the salary cap. Before the cuts, the Jets had been over by more than $25 million; they were about $5 million under it afterward.

The NBA announced Sunday that Pistons guard Will Bynum has been suspended one game for “striking” Pacers forward Tyler Hansbrough in the stomach during Detroit’s 90-72 loss to Indiana at the Palace of Auburn Hills on Saturday night.

He was not eligible to play when the Pistons hosted the Hawks on Monday. Bynum is on the books for $3.3 million this season. The one-game suspension without pay will cost him roughly $29,500.

Welcome to Smith’s fishbowl existence at the NFL Scouting Combine. Coaches and executives grilled Smith all weekend. When he throw Sunday, every toss was critiqued, everything he does was scrutinized. NFL Combine 2013: Geno Smith said he didn’t attend the Senior Bowl because he was advised not to go.

That’s life for a potential No. 1 overall pick who looks good to some scouts, dangerous to others. Some scouts believe the quarterback-needy Chiefs will make Smith the top pick. Others see far too much inconsistency in the former West Virginia star and don’t believe Smith should even be a first-rounder.

That vast disagreement about Smith made him a lightning rod in Indy. But Smith, who participate in every drill last weekend, hopes the Combine represents a kickoff to a successful campaign to be the top overall pick.
