The title of “hero” is often thrown around freely in the world of sports.

On Tuesday, Tennessee Titans linebacker Jonathan Willard truly earned that title. The 6’2”, 225-pound Willard reportedly saved a family from a burning car.

Willard, who signed with the Titans as an undrafted free agent out of Clemson after the 2013 NFL draft, said that he spotted a car with black smoke coming out of it while driving from South Carolina to Tennessee for the Titans’ upcoming training camp.

Sensing the danger that the woman, three children and dog were in, Willard reportedly sped up, flashed his brights and honked his horn in an attempt to catch the attention of the driver, finally getting her to pull over. From there, the linebacker sprung into action.

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp doesn’t want any revisionist historians giving him the 2011 NL MVP award, won by now-disgraced Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun.

He just doesn’t think Braun deserves to have it, either. Asked by reporters before Tuesday night’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, Kemp acknowledged that he feels Braun should be stripped of the award.

“I mean, yeah, I do,” Kemp said. “I feel like it should be, but that’s not for me to decide, you know?” The Milwaukee slugger was suspended for the remainder of the 2013 season by Major League Baseball Monday for his part in the Biogenesis performance-enhancing drugs scandal.

Braun released a statement acknowledging his mistakes.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded cornerback Eric Wright to the San Francisco 49ers for a conditional pick in the 2014 draft, the team announced Friday.

Signed as a free agent last year, Wright had a rocky first season with the Bucs. He missed part of the offseason program while dealing with an undisclosed medical condition and was suspended four games for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Wright played in 10 games with Tampa Bay, finishing with 37 tackles and one interception. In 2011 with the Detroit Lions, Wright started 16 games and had four interceptions.

After last season, Wright agreed to a restructured contract that included a large pay cut, which seemed to clear the way for him to stay with the Bucs.

But Tampa Bay apparently had other ideas. The departure of Wright likely clears the way for rookie Johnthan Banks to start opposite Darrelle Revis.

Bucs offensive lineman Donald Penn voiced his displeasure with the trade on Twitter:

“I can’t believe this trade and I’m just gonna  leave it at that.”

This one will sting for a while.

Tiger Woods was poised to make a run at his 15th major title but simply never got on track Sunday in the final round of the 142nd Open Championship at baked-out Muirfield in Gullane, Scotland.

The top-ranked Woods entered the final round tied for second, two shots behind leader Lee Westwood. But Tiger bogeyed three of the first six holes and never challenged, closing with a 3-over-par 74.

Tiger tied for sixth at 2-over-par 286, five strokes behind winner Phil Mickelson, who matched the week’s best score with a final-round 66.

After putting on slick greens early in the tournament, a composed but frustrated Woods said they got progressively slower and he had a hard time adjusting.

“They were much slower, much softer,” Tiger said.

“I don’t think I got too many putts to the hole. I really had a hard time and left myself a couple of long lag putts early on when it was really blowing and left them way short and didn’t make those putts. I really didn’t play that poorly.”

Olympic hurdler turned bobsledder Lolo Jones is under investigation for her  role in a bar brawl with the step-daughter of bobsled Hall-of-Famer, Tony Carlino.

Jones was allegedly partying at Roomers, a popular club in Lake Placid, N.Y., when the incident took place and the two women had to be separated by bouncers.

Darrin Steele, chief executive officer for the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation (USBSF), said that it did not appear as if Jones “knocked out” the woman as initially alleged. He also said that though no sanctions had been levied against Jones — yet — that was subject to change as more details come to light. Neither Jones or Carlino have issued comments.

As previously reported, Jones recently made headlines when she mocked Trayvon Martin’s friend, Rachel Jeantel, on Twitter by comparing her to Tyler Perry’s alter-ego ‘Madea.’

Dwyane Wade’s ex-wife, Siohvaughn Funches, was captured on video in front of Chicago’s Daley Center blasting him for leaving her broke and “on the street.”

Funches claims that Wade stopped depositing money into a joint account, per a 2008 agreement. The agreement also requires Wade to pay half of the income from his 2006 NBA contract into the account.

The suit, filed by attorney William P. Suriano, claims Siohvaughn Wade has been unable to pay her mortgage or home or auto insurance because of funds withheld from Wade’s endorsement deals with retailers T-Mobile, Staples, Gatorade and Li Ning, a Chinese sporting goods company.

Funches received a lump sum of $1 million plus receives $25,000 per month in spousal support in their divorce settlement, but apparently that was not enough.

Buccaneers kicker Connor Barth Will miss the upcoming season after tearing his right Achilles tendon while playing in a charity basketball game last week.

The Buccaneers quickly signed veteran Lawrence Tynes to replace him. Barth Will, 27, will be placed on the reserve/non-football injury list. Barth Will has already had surgery and will spend the season rehabilitating.

Almost one month after leading the Heat to their second consecutive championship, James again won the ESPY for Best Male Athlete, topping Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera, Minnesota Vikings’ running back Adrian Peterson and Olympic champion swimmer Michael Phelps at the 21st awards show on Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

James also grabbed ESPYS for Best Championship Performance and Best NBA Player.

The first of what’s likely to be many honors for recently retired Ravens star Ray Lewis comes on Sept. 22.

Lewis, who currently works with ESPN, will be inducted in the team’s Ring of Honor on that date during a Week 3 game with the Texans, according to the team’s website. Lewis retired at the end of last season after helping the team win its second NFL title. He played 17 years in the pros and ranks among the top linebackers in league history.

The team has already announced a statue in Lewis’ honor will be erected outside the stadium. But that won’t happen before the Ring of Honor. Also, Lewis is a certain to make the NFL Hall of Fame when he’s eligible in five years.

Lewis will join five other Ravens players in the Ring of Honor: Jamal Lewis, Matt Stover, Jonathan Ogden, Peter Boulware and Michael McCrary. Former majority owner Art Modell and eight members of the old Baltimore Colts team are also in the Ring of Honor.
