On Thursday, Hillsborough County School officials will have the task of selecting one person to honor as their “Teacher of the Year.” This year, the competitors include three elementary school teachers, one middle school teacher, and two high school teachers.
The nominees are Karen Barmore, Reagan Lawrence, Leronya Vaughn Dunmore (pictured), Amanda Morin, Patrick Boyko, and Luis Daniel Alvarez.
Ms. Barmore is an Art Teacher at Gorrie Elementary School. A Florida State University graduate, she has been teaching at Gorrie Elementary for 19 years.
Ms. Lawrence has been a Hillsborough County School teacher for the past 8 years. She holds a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education from Stevenson University and a Masters in Educational Leadership from Nova University.
Ms. Vaughn-Dunmore is a third generation educator of Hillsborough County. Currently assigned to Sheehy Elementary School, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Nova Southeastern University and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Florida Atlantic University.
Ms. Morin, of Walker Middle School, graduated from Gaither High School and earned a B. A. in Secondary Social Science Education from USF and started her five year teaching career at Benito Middle School as a History teacher.
Boyko graduated from the University of South Florida with a Bachelor’s in History. He began teaching in 2007 at Thomas Jefferson High School where he is currently assigned.
Alvarez, of Leto High School, earned his Bachelor of Music Education in 2007 and his Masters of Music in 2009 from the University of South Florida. He has served as the Director of Bands for the past 5 years.
In addition to the “Teacher of the Year” honor, one of five educators will be chosen as the recipient of the Ida S. Baker Award. The finalists for this honor are: Evan Davis, of Armwood High School; Jeff Ditman, of Gaither High School; Julia Sarmiento, of Shields, Kathleen Wasserman, of Franklins Boys Preparatory School, and Melissa Toothman, of Plant High School.
