FAMU’S PRESIDENT HAS CONVERSATION WITH ALUM AND SUPPORTERS

           FAMU President, Dr. Elmira Mangum was in Tampa on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, for an Exclusive Conversation with alumni and supporters of the school. She gave her vision for FAMU and those in attendance joined the discussion about future opportunities and goals.

NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS HOLD

INAUGURAL MEETING AT HIGH SCHOOL

                Recently, Mrs. Kim Moore, Principal of Middleton High School, hosted an organizational meeting for the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). The purpose of the meeting was to launch an inaugural junior chapter of the organization on the campus of a local high school. Members of the National Society of Black Engineers, Tampa Bay Professional Chapter were on hand to explain the organization to the students. Roth Marcelin, member of the National Society of Black Engineers, USF Pre-College Initiative Chairperson, introduced Ms. Maya Carrasquillo, who delivered the keynote address. ATTORNEYS HOST ‘LEARN YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS’ COMMUNITY WORKSHOP

The George Edgecomb Bar Association hosted a community workshop on Saturday, May 14, 2016. Entitled, “Learn Your Legal Rights,” the workshop was held at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 8:30 a. m. to 4:30 p. m. Those who attended the free event were able to gain information about such topics from personal injury to foreclosure/bankruptcy. Community sponsors of the event were the Hillsborough County Branch NAACP and Tampa Organization of Black Affairs (TOBA). TAMPA ORGANIZATION OF BLACK AFFAIRS SUPPORTS MEN OF VISION

The Tampa Organization of Black Affairs (TOBA) recently recognized the “Men of Vision” (MOV) for its work to provide positive experiences to better prepare Black male students for life. TOBA presented the MOV with supplemental funding to support their college tours program. Dr. Glenn Cherry, TOBA Board Member and Chairman of its Youth Development Committee said, “It is part of TOBA’s mission to sponsor various programs that refine the leadership skills of our youth. Furthermore, we support and encourage young people so that they can develop pride and gain confidence within themselves to be successful and productive in their personal lives and be better prepared to become future leaders within our community.”

300 WOMEN ATTEND CONFERENCE HOSTED BY COLLEGE HILL CHURCH OF GOD IN CHRIST

College Hill Church of God in Christ hosted ‘COGIC Woman Of Excellence,’ a women’s conference, on Saturday, May 7, 2016. The conference, which attracted more than 300 women, was held at the Church of God in Christ Conference Center. Superintendent Charles Davis, host pastor, was one of a limited number of men enjoying the event. This year’s theme was “Pearls and Lace: A Tribute to Mothers.” There were speakers, prizes and of course a sumptuous meal. The ‘Woman of Excellence’ title was bestowed upon Mother Ruth Nettles. FIRST ANNUAL ‘YOU DESERVED TO BE LOVED’ GIRLS SUMMIT IS SUCCESSFUL

The first annual “You Deserve To Be Loved” Girls Summit held in Brandon at Hillsborough Community College on Saturday, April 30^th has been deemed successful. There were 50 young ladies who were in attendance.  USF’S KENTE AWARDS HONOR ALUMNI, COMMUNITY LEADER

Dr. Judy Genshaft, President of the University of South Florida, and the USF African American Advisory Committee hosted the 2016 Kente Awards and Scholarship Reception on Thursday, April 28^th in Gibbons Alumni Center Traditions Hall on the Tampa campus. This year’s event honored Senator Arthenia Joyner as the Community Leader and Bernard Batson, who received the USF Alumni Award. The 2016-2017 student recipients of the Dr. Israel “Ike” Tribble, Jr. Endowed Scholarship were announced. SEMINOLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CELEBRATES 100^TH ANNIVERSARY

Seminole Elementary School celebrated its 100^th anniversary on Thursday, April 21, 2016. Officials from the School District of Hillsborough County, community persons, parents, friends and supporters of the school were in attendance to help the students celebrate the grand event.
