DRESS FOR SUCCESS CELEBRATES 18TH ANNIVERSARY WITH LUNCHEON, FASHION SHOW
A Luncheon and Fall Fashion Show was the highlight of the 18th Anniversary Celebration of Dress For Success. The event was held on Thursday, October 27, 2016, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel at Tampa Airport-Westshore. The mission of Dress For Success is to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and development tools to help them thrive in work and in life. FUTURE MISS B-CU CROWNED DURING 35TH CORORNATION
The Hillsborough County Chapter of Bethune-Cookman University National Alumni Association hosted its 35th annual fundraiser, “Future Miss B-CU” Coronation on Sunday, October 9, 2016. The event was held at 4 p. m. at the College Hill Conference Center, 1002 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Mrs. Raquel Hunter and Jacqueline D. Grant were Coronation Chairpersons. Andra Diggs is president of the Alumni Association. 24TH ANNUAL NEHEMIAH LEGACY LUNCHEON HELD
Members of the community gathered at the TPepin Hospitality Centre on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 for the 24th Annual Nehemiah Legacy Luncheon. The theme for the luncheon this year was “Creating Economic Opportunity.” The luncheon is the signature fundraiser of the year for the Corporation to Develop Communities of Tampa, Inc., (CDC of Tampa, Inc.). This year, Paul Weech, President and CEO of NeighborWorks America delivered the keynote address. FAITH, HOPE AND CHARITY ONE OF 2 GROUPS HONORED WITH ‘LAMP OF KNOWLEDGE’
Faith, Hope And Charity, a popular music group from the late ’60s and ’70s, was one of two groups recognized with “The Lamp of Knowledge” by the Robert W. Saunders Library Foundation. The R&B group was honored along with the Howard W. Blake High School Alumni Association at the library on Monday, October 10th. LAY ORGANIZATION HONORS STATE SENATOR
Recently, State Senator Arthenia Joyner was honored for her many years of service. The special recognition took place during the 76th Session of the West Coast Annual Conference Lay Organization Worship Experience. The organization paid tribute to Senator Joyner, who is a longtime member of Allen Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church, for her many years of service to the church. Senator Joyner was presented a plaque by Reverend Dr. David W. Green, Sr., Pastor of Allen Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church. Among those in attendance at the presentation were from left to right: Hugh Yancy, Jr., West Coast Conference Lay President; Bishop A. J. TAMPA CHAPTER OF JACK AND JILL HOSTS RECEPTION FOR NATIONAL PRESIDENT
The Tampa Chapter of Jack And Jill of America, Incorporated. hosted a reception for its National President, Mrs. Joli Cooper-Nelson, who is also a member of the Tampa Chapter. Mrs. Cooper-Nelson was elected National President at the 42nd National Convention held in Palm Desert, California. She now becomes the 25th National President of the organization considered the premier organization for African American families. Family members and members 0f the Tampa Chapter joined Mrs. Nelson at the Centre Club for the reception, which was organized by Mrs. Diana Allen Quin. PLAQUE PLACED IN GROCERY STORES TO HONOR FATHER, SON FOR 100 YEARS SERVICE
Winn Dixie, Inc. dedicated three stores in honor of a father/son duo, Ishmon Johnson, Sr. and Ishmon Johnson, Jr. for their nearly 100 years of loyalty and service to the company. One plaque was hung in a Jacksonville store on Thursday, Sept. 29th, where both men worked, and 2 plaques were hung in 2 stores in the Tampa community where the younger Johnson worked in management. On Saturday, October 2, 2016, a plaque was hung in stores on Sheldon Rd. and in Lutz on U. S. 41.
