CDC OF TAMPA, INC. YOUTH LEADERSHIP MOVEMENT SENIOR CELEBRATION
The Corporation to Development Communities (CDC) of Tampa, Inc. Youth Leadership Movement held its High School Senior Celebration on April 20, 2017 at Cyrus Greene Center. The event recognizes the high school seniors who are graduating, and are graduating out of the CDC program. HBCU COLLEGE FAIR AT HOWARD W. BLAKE HIGH SCHOOL
Howard W. Blake High School of the Performing Arts was the site of an Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) College Fair and Decision Day last month. Among the colleges and universities with representatives in attendance were: Spelman College, Bethune-Cookman University, Florida A&M University, Hillsborough Community College, Cheyney University, Edward Waters College, and Florida Memorial University. These members of the Blake High School Urban Teaching Academy who assisted with the event are: Ayanna Anderson, Chaya Baptiste, Jael Baptiste, Alana Blocker, Julissa Flores, Samiyah Thomas and Derricka Whyte. TWO YOUNG MEN FROM SAME TROOP MAKE EAGLE SCOUTS
Boy Scout Troop 654 of St. John Progressive Missionary Baptist Church held its Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Marcus Wynn and Serion Bellamy. The ceremony was held on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at St. John Progressive M. B. Church. The Master of Ceremony was Dexter Fleming, who also gave the Eagle Scout Charge and conducted the Lighting of the Eagle Trail Ceremony. NATIONAL SIGNING DAY HELD AT MIDDLETON HIGH SCHOOL
Recently, faculty, staff and students at Middleton High School were excited to participate in National Signing Day. The event was held at the school in the Auditorium. Several students took advantage of the opportunity to sign with the colleges or universities of their choice. In addition to out-of-town schools, local facilities from Hillsborough Community College, including Dr. Ken Atwater, President, were present. MEETING ON SCHOOL BOUNDARY CHANGES HELD AT VAN BUREN
Two parent/community meetings on proposed boundary changes were held last month for the North Tampa and New Tampa areas. The meetings were in the format of an open house, where parents talked with district staff. Staff members from Choice, Transportation and the affected schools were in attendance. The first meeting was on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, in the Van Buren Middle School cafeteria. Parents of students currently assigned to MOSI Partnership School, Forest Hills, Mort, Pizzo, Shaw and Witter Elementary Schools and Van Buren and Greco Middle Schools were invited to attend. Also, students currently assigned to the Hunter’s Green Elementary and Clark Elementary Schools boundaries living in the North Tampa area were invited to attend. STUDENTS AT LEGACY PREPARATORY ACADEMY VISIT THE CAPITOL
Students from Legacy Preparatory Academy went on a Grand VIP Tour to Tallahassee last week. While there, they visited the Capitol, Florida State University and Florida A&M University. During the Capitol visit, the 18 students and teachers were recognized and announced during the Legislative session.
