        On October 4, 2024, the Hillsborough County Historical Advisory Council revealed a historic marker at Rogers Park Golf Course, in honor of the first Black golf course in Tampa.  Gathered for the special recognition were Alison Smith, Chair, Hillsborough County Advisory Council, Joseph W. J. Robison, Tampa Sports Authority Board member, Gwen Myers, Hillsborough County Commissioner, James Ransom, grandson of G.D. FRATERNITY JOINS OTHERS IN SERVING HOT MEALS 

        Members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. joined Commissioner Gwen Myers, Mayor Jane Castor and other groups as they served hot meals on Sunday, October 13, after Hurricane Milton. The groups gathered at Dr. Carter G. Woodson PK-8 School to serve dinner to students of the school and residents in the Sulphur Springs community. MRS. WILLIE MAE DAVIS LANE CELEBRATED ON HER 90TH BIRTHDAY

MRS. WILLIE MAE DAVIS LANE CELEBRATED ON HER 90TH BIRTHDAY

      Mrs. Willie Mae Davis Lane celebrated her 90th birthday over the weekend with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and church family. The event was held on Saturday at the Charles Davis Conference Center, where all in attendance were asked to wear blue.

     Celebrating with Mrs. Lane, center, were her children: Solomon ‘Sol’ Davis, Peggy Davis Berger, Ret. Lt. Colonel Willie Ernie Davis, Ella Davis Lightbody, Ret. Chief Petty Officer William C. Conage and Robert E. Davis. Mrs. Lane is the mother of the late Cynthia Davis Williams and Sgt. First Class Wilbert Davis. Wilbert was among the first casualties during the Iraq War.

     Mrs. Lane is a Mother at her church, College Hill COGIC and still actively attends.

YOUTH IN SUMMER PROGRAM GET ANNUAL BOOST FOR BACK TO SCHOOL

      Youth in the summer program at the Gwen Miller Community Center at the Woodland Terrace Park received their annual visit from Darrell Daniels, Executive Director Youth Programs, Derrick Brooks Charities. Daniels is the annual speaker for the summer youth events, sharing words of encouragement for the upcoming school year. INVESTITURE OF JULIE SIMONE SNEED AS U. S. DISTRICT JUDGE HELD IN ORLANDO

      An audience estimated at 300 individuals attended the Investiture of Julie Simone Sneed as United States District Judge, Middle District of Florida. The audience included her family, magistrates, federal judges, appellate court judges, appeals courts judges, district judges, former Supreme Court Judge, many of her club sisters, sorority sisters, and many friends. The 3 p. m. ceremony was held on Friday, July 12, 2024, at the U. S. Courthouse, George C. Young Federal Annex, in Orlando. Judge Sneed is shown with her family, who participated in the enrobing: daughter, Asha, son, Ryan, and her husband, Kevin B. Sneed, PharmD, FNAP, FNPHA, University of South Florida, Dean, Taneja College of Pharmacy. [See full story on the ceremony in next week’s edition.]

      Spring of Life COGIC held its 1st Annual 7-Up Program on June 23, 2024.  The theme was “Joy Over the Rainbow.” There were 7 speakers, 7 subjects, who spoke 7 minutes each, topped off with 7-Up Cake and 7-Up Soda for refreshments.
