YOUNG MEN ATTEND BLACK BROWN AND COLLEGE BOUND LUNCHEON

         Black and Brown young men from around the country were in Tampa this week for Hillsborough Community College’s Black Brown And College Brown Sylvia Marion Carley Signature Luncheon. The event was held on Monday, March 26th at the Tampa Convention Center. The guest speaker was former NFL Player and TV personality, Michael Strahan. Among the young men who attended the luncheon were: Preston Ashby, Samuel Lopez, Jean Vital, David Casey, T. J.          The Centre For Women WAVES of Change Women’s Leadership Awards Luncheon was held last Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at Armature Works. The sold-out luncheon provides a chance for women to network, develop relationships and discuss issues affecting women in business and their personal lives. The 2018 WAVES Award was presented to Ms. Clemmie Perry.          Last month, the gymnasium at Sligh Middle Magnet School was the site of “The Art of Freedom Dance And Community Fest.” The showcase event featured dance teams, step teams, Greek step teams, drumlines, and much more. INAUGURAL PRAYER BREAKFAST HELD

         Tabitha Court No. 15, Heroines of Jericho, PHA, held their Inaugural Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, March 10, 2018. The event was held at the Hillsborough County Children’s Board.  The speaker for the morning was Rev. Lynnette Barrett, of St. James AME Church, Progress Village. Those in attendance included: from left, Byron Johnson, Tawanda Peoples, Iris Warren, Andreatha Nurse, Bessie Thomas, Agnes Turner, Rev. Lynnette Barrett, guest speaker; Dr. Bertha Baker, Greta Powell, Betty Baker, and Gail Williams.

U. S. Representative Kathy Castor (14th District of Florida) recognized three women during Black History Month. The women were celebrated for the extraordinary contributions they have made as National and Tampa Bay leaders. The special ceremony was held at the Robert W. Saunders, Sr. Public Library on February 21, 2018. Women recognized were: Joli Cooper-Nelson, National President of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.; Carolyn House Stewart, Esquire, Immediate Past President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; and Dr. Paulette C. Walker, Immediate Past President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Last month, during the UNCF Annual Luncheon, AT&T honored 7 community leaders at the Tampa Marriott Westshore.  The segment of the program was entitled
“History By Us,” and it highlighted African Americans in the Tampa Bay Area who have made an impact on their respective communities.
