 ‘WE READ’ BOOK CLUB DISCUSSES MORE THAN BOOKS

  

                  The “We Read” Book Club gathered at a local restaurant recently to discuss their book of the month. But as members say, they talk about more than just books. “We Read” Book Club is a book club cultivating relatable, educational and affirmative discussions in the community, while also promoting adult literacy. Topics of discussion range from upbringing, personal evolving, relationships, social injustice to mental health. MINISTRY RECOGNIZES ‘FIRSTS’ IN LAW ENFORCEMENT DURING PROGRAM

 

         The Refreshing Spirit Ministry, Greater Tampa Bay District, recognized three of the ‘firsts’ in Law Enforcement in the Tampa community during its Black History Program last month. The ministry recognized Detective Patricia Bell Pierce Coleman, Lieutenant Willie G. Monroe and Captain Sam Jones, Sr.  Mr. Monroe was in attendance, and Ms. Anita Jordan represented her mother, Mrs. Pierce Coleman. The program also paid tribute to Harriet Tubman and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Among those who had a part on the program were: from left, Dr. Clovis Dunbar, Pastor; Lady Lois Dunbar, Rose and Dea. COMMITTEE MAKES PREPARATIONS

FOR ANNUAL FUNDRAISER

 

Recently, a group of concerned citizens held a meeting to make the final preparations for their annual fundraiser. For the last three years, they have hosted an evening of jazz to benefit St. Peter Claver Catholic School. The event, entitled “Jazz’n At The Italian Club,”will take place on Sunday, April 14, 2019, at the Italian Club. MEN OF VISION VISITS TALLAHASSEE

DURING SPRING BREAK

 

Last week, students throughout Hillsborough County enjoyed their Spring holiday. Many of them just enjoyed a week of relaxation. However, others, such as members of the Men of Vision, Inc., founded by educator Ross Anderson, spent their spring holiday with several activities. During the week, the young men fed the homeless, visited Zoo Tampa, held their own summits on current events plaguing society, and traveled to Tallahassee, where they met with several elected officials. LEGACY LUNCHEON HONORS ALUMNI, COMMUNITY CITIZEN

 

         The Hillsborough County Alumni Chapter of Bethune-Cookman University National Alumni Association, held its Second Annual Legacy Luncheon, honoring Legacy Alumni in the chapter, along with a Community Citizen, who exemplifies excellence in service in Hillsborough County. The 11:30 a. m. luncheon was held Saturday, March 16th, at the Sheraton Hotel – Brandon. The 2019 theme was, “We are Legacy, Depart to Serve.” Alumni Gina Sanders and comedian Rod-Z were Mistress and Master of Ceremonies. Dr. Davina Jones was Luncheon Chairperson and Raquel Watson Hunter is President of the Hillsborough County Alumni Chapter. OAK PARK STUDENTS OBSERVE BLACK HISTORY MONTH WITH ‘MOTOWN REVIEW’

           The students at Oak Park Elementary School observed Black History Month with a “Motown Review” on Thursday, February 28th. This is the school’s annual talent show performance where the students dance, wear different costumes and lip sync several of the groups from Motown. The event was coordinated by Music Teacher, Corey Brown with the assistance of teacher Christy Rice. Ryan Moody is the Principal. Students who participated in the talent show are: in front, Saniya Lewis, Hailey Perez, Trinitie Fain, Skylee Hayes, Deloni Worlds, Carmelo Mitchell, Frankie Carter, Kadarian Lewis, and Johnny Lewis.            The University of South Florida Black Leadership Network held its Second Annual Scholarship Soiree. The event was held on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, in the Sam and Martha Gibbons Alumni Center on the USF Campus. Scholarships were presented to several students. Among those who had a part in the program were: Vada Manager, Board of Directors, Helios Education Foundation; James McDaniels, one of the first Blacks to graduate from USF; President Judy Genshaft, who is also a donor to the Black Leadership Scholarship; and Jerry Bell, a founding member of the Black Leadership Network.
