NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BLACKS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE MEETING IN TAMPA
The National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice held its 46th Annual Meeting in Tampa this week, July 14-18, 2019, at the Grand Hyatt Regency. More than 500 representatives were in attendance. This year’s theme was, “NABCJ ~ Taking A Look At The Line Of Justice: Is It Broken Or Bent?” Among those in attendance was the Student Chapter from Bethune-Cookman University. CHURCH RECOGNIZES ITS GRADUATES
Last month, the New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Tampa, Inc., recognized its graduating seniors. The ceremony was held on Sunday, June 23, 2019. The education Department was in charge of the recognition with Alyndria Miller and Shonda Lockwood assisting Pastor Larry L. Roundtree, II. The high school graduates recognized during the ceremony were: Destinee Cooper, Deshawnda Hall-Lewis, Robert Harrison, Jr., Naleyzah Kendrick, Xavion Lockwood, and Lauryn Rose Thompson. The graduates from institutions of higher learning were: Danyelle Coleman, Marra Earle, Ras Jah Naye Harrison, Mechelle Humbert, Minister Theron James, Jacquelyn Johnson, Kalen Johnson, and Tiffany Johnson. 78th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS
Ms. Lillie Toombs-Minor celebrated her 78th birthday with a party on Saturday at ‘A Level Up Rental Hall.’ There were many family members and friends on hand to share in her enjoyment of the day. CITY COUNCILMAN GUDES PRESENTS COMMENDATION TO ORGANIZATION OF REALTORS
Tampa City Councilman Orlando Gudes presented a commendation to the Tampa Bay Association of Realist National Association of Real Estate Brokers. The Commendation reads in part, “for their sustained efforts towards increasing minority home ownership,” and its commitment to “advocacy and civil rights work.” Travis Brooks, president of the Tampa Bay Association of Realist, accepts the Commendation from Councilman Gudes. STUDENTS RECEIVE THE BOBBY BOWDEN SCHOLARSHIP
The City of Tampa Black History Committee held its Scholarship Awards Program on May 30, 2019. The committee awarded scholarships to several 2019 African-American students graduating from high school in Hillsborough County. Bowden, one of the founding members of the City of Tampa Black History Committee, presents scholarships annually to students attending Florida A&M University. BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA HOSTS WHITNEY M. YOUNG, JR. AWARDS BREAKFAST
The 2019 Whitney M. Young, Jr, Awards Breakfast was held Tuesday, June 11, 2019, at the Tampa River Center, Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park. The Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award recognizes outstanding service by individuals and organizations that work with Scouting programs or programs that exemplify the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law to youth in underserved communities. This year’s recipients were: Sheriff Chad Chronister, Troy Taylor, Bullard Family Foundation, Senator Arthenia Joyner and Garland V. Stewart (Posthumously). FORMER TEAMMATES JOIN SELMON FAMILY AT STATUE UNVEILING
Several teammates who played football with Lee Roy Selmon and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, joined his family and other officials for the unveiling of a statue to honor the standout player. Selmon was the first overall player drafted in 1976 by the NFL, and the first player drafted by the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority hosted the unveiling ceremony on Friday, June 7, 2019. The statue sits in downtown Tampa in an area known as Selmon Greenway. This is a paved area in the shade of Selmon Expressway, just off Borein and Florida Ave. From left at the unveiling are: former teammate, Tyrone Keys; former teammate and brother, Dewey Selmon; daughter, Brandy Selmon; widow, Claybra Selmon; former teammate, Dave Green; sons, Lee Roy, Jr. and Chris Selmon; and former teammate, Council Rudolph.
