MIDDLETON HIGH CLASS OF 1959 HAS 60th REUNION

 

         Members of the Middleton High School Class of 1959 gathered Aug. 2 through 5 at the Hampton Inn Airport/Westshore for their 60thReunion.   The reunion theme was “Painting Beautiful Pictures As We Move Forward.” There were several activities. Among those who attended this all-white event were: front row, left to right: Olivia Carmichael Brown, Florence Reeves, Eloise Smith, Novelar Cherry, Gloria Austin, Dr. Ernestine Anderson Glenn, Gloridine McNair, and Joyce Stokes. CITY OF TAMPA BLACK HISTORY COMMITTEE SERVES COMMUNITY

 

         The City of Tampa Black History Committee recently presented scholarships to several graduating seniors. Throughout the year, the committee hosts several events as fundraisers to support the scholarships. In February, the committee hosts a themed Black History Month program, and in May the golf tournament.                   The Disciples of Christ Christian Fellowship, Inc., held a ribbon cutting service to the doors of its new facility. The church building is Phase 1 of its planned 11,000 square feet campus. They will be having dedication services each weekend through September 7th, 1 p. m. on Saturdays, and 11 a. m. on Sundays.                   Grammy-award winner Lionel Richie, center, was in town in concert at Amalie Arena recently. Richie has been touring several cities around the country. When he stopped in Tampa, he spent time with his Tuskegee, AL high school and college classmate, retired commercial pilot Wesley Collins, and his family.                   A recent graduate, who plans to study at Florida A&M University, recently received the Carla Lewis Scholarship from the Mayor’s African- American Advisory Council. The presentation was made this past Monday (August 5th) in the Mayor’s Conference Room. FRIENDS OF LIBRARY MEET WITH POLICE

 

Recently, Friends of the C. Blythe Andrews, Jr., Library met with Tampa Police Major Calvin Johnson. The purpose of the meeting was a collaboration between police and the Friends of the C. Blythe Andrews, Jr., Library. Their goal is to address the need for community counseling in East Tampa and to support single parents dealing with their children. The initial contact was made with Earlisha Oates and April Cobb, of Beaute Blue Print Foundation, to bring such a program to the library.
