7^th ANNUAL SUIT UP & SHOW UP EVENT HELD

Recently, employees and mentors of the Corporation to Develop Communities, of Tampa, Inc., (CDC of Tampa, Inc.,), held their 7^th Annual Suit Up & Show Up Event. It is held annually Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service. It is designed to change the attitude of young men in the community through discussion and culminates with the young men “suiting up and showing up for the roles in their lives.” With the assistance of volunteers, each young man met with a professional tailor, selected his outfit, and took part in the transformation. The mentors who provided assistance to the young men, shown from left to right are: David Jones, CDC of Tampa, Inc.; Freddy Barton, Executive Director of Safe & Sound, who served as the keynote speaker; Albert Lee, of TBBIC; John Flanagan, of Career Source; Steve Cona, Hillsborough County School Board; Ernest Coney,  President & CEO of the CDC of Tampa, Inc.; City Council member Orlando Gudes; Rod Carter, of WFLA, who served as the Master of Ceremonies, and Pastor, Ernest Coney, Sr.

MIDDLETON HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1967 BIRTHDAY AND CHRISTMAS PARTY

         Middleton Senior High School Class of 1967 celebrated their 70^th birthdays during their Christmas party last month at a local establishment. Those in attendance included: Willie C. HONORING DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

     A group of friends and neighbors came together recently to honor the life and legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The group held their “Drum Major Gala” on Harbor Island. ATTENDEES AT TOBA’S 40^th DR. KING LEADERSHIP BREAKFAST

                  The Tampa Organization of Black Affairs (TOBA) hosted a capacity audience last Monday at the Downtown Hilton Hotel. The event was the 40^thannual celebration of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Breakfast. The keynote speaker was Princeton University African American Studies Chair, Eddie S. Glaude, Jr. (See Story On Page 4-A). CARTER G. WOODSON SCHOOL TALENT SHOWCASE

            The Dr. Carter G. Woodson School held its first Talent Showcase last month. The school debuted several additional teams that the students have now become a part of. ATTORNEY JOYNER RECOGNIZED FOR 50 YEARS OF SERVICE

            On January 6, 2020, family, friends, and well-wishers gathered at TPepin Hospitality Centre to pay tribute to Attorney Arthenia Joyner. The tributes were to honor her 50 years of service. She has built a storied career, starting as a high schol student, followed by 50 years as an attorney, and the years of public service as a State Reppresentative and State Senator. WOMEN’S COUNCIL OF REALTORS HOSTS HOMEBUYER EXPO

                        The Bay Area Women’s Council of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) held a Homebuyer FUNDamentals Expo on Saturday, January 11, 2020. The Expo was held at Tampa Park Plaza with several presenters. Those who attended were able to learn about the different aspects of owning a home.                         More than 30 organizations were represented recently at Hillsborough Community College Ybor Campus to receive the Martin Luther King, Jr. ‘MLK Day of Service’ grants. Each of the organizations offers a service to the community with the grant they receive.
