FORMER NFL PLAYER EMMITT SMITH WAS GUEST SPEAKER FOR DR. SYLVIA CARLEY LUNCHEON

BEVERAGE COMPANY HOLDS BLACK HISTORY PROGRAM AT LOCAL CENTER
Coca Cola Beverage Florida held its Black History Program at the Gwendolyn M. Miller Community Center on February 16th. Coca Cola awarded two lap top computers to two deserving students who participate in the City of Tampa After School Program at the Center.
The students that were awarded were Destiny Bell, a 7th grader at Sligh Middle Magnet School and is an ‘A’ Honor Roll Student; and Felix Harrell, a 10th grader at Hillsborough High School and is an ‘A-B’ Honor Roll Student. BRANDON HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI HONOR ANDRE DARBY, AN ENCOURAGER
Frances Key coordinated an event to honor Andre Darby, who is in the early stages of Alzheimer. He has been an inspiration to so many others, she said. The event was held at the Valrico Gathering Oaks Ranch. Darby played football, baseball and wrestling while a student at Brandon High School. He also set many athletic records as a student. Since then, he has been an inspiration to Brandon students and others, while “encouraging them to go after their dreams, and become a success,” Ms. Key stated. CITY OF TAMPA BLACK HISTORY PROGRAM FEATURES ‘HIDDEN FIGURES: OUR UNSUNG HEROES’
The City of Tampa Black History Committee 34th Annual Black History Celebration was held on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at the Downtown Tampa Convention Center. This year’s theme was: “Hidden Figures: Our Unsung Heroes.” The keynote speaker was Tiffany Greene, ESPN Sports Commentator. The Mistress of Ceremonies was Dalia Dangerfield, Spectrum Bay News 9 Reporter. The Committee highlighted 12 individuals who have impacted the community in a positive manner. NEW MT. ZION MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH ORDAINS 5 NEW DEACONS
New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church added to its Deacons’ Ministry with the ordination of 5 new deacons on Sunday, January 21, 2022. The service, which included their wives, was conducted by the pastor, Reverend Larry L. Roundtree, II. The candidates had been preparing and studying for more than 2 years. LONGTIME YOUTH COACH BOBBY WILDS HONORED FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE
The Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival hosted Youth Day on Saturday, January 8, 2022. The Bobby Wilds Football Clas- sic was an event to “celebrate the man” for his legendary community impact in the Tampa Bay community for more than 40 years. The event was held at his alma mater, Howard W. Blake High School. Black Heritage Festival Co-Chair, Ruby Jackson presented a plaque to Wilds. Honoree Wilds was joined by his family at the event.
