The congregation at 34th Street Church of God honored their pastor and first lady for their 32nd Anniversary. Several recognition services were held to honor Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Thomas (Marva) Scott. The concluding service was an Appreciation Service on April 22, 2012 with Rev. Dr. Henry J. Lyons as the guest speaker. Rev. and Mrs. Scott, center, are joined by their son-in-law and daughter, Rev. The National Council of Negro Women at the University of South Florida held their 3rd Annual Big Hat Brunch on Sunday, April 15, 2012, 11 a. m. in the Marshall Student Center Ballroom. Brianna Williams was the chair. This year’s theme was “The Essence of a Woman.” The keynote speaker was the Honorable Val Demings, former Chief of the Orlando Police Department and current Congressional candidate. Young ladies in attendance donned their fanciest attire and wore their biggest and most creative hats. Among those who attended the brunch were: Deloria Jackson, Shambrey Oliver, Tralanda Todd, Jalisa Jefferson, Tyler Smith, Kitarria Jackson and Dariel Jackson. The newest Tampa Family Health Centers had its Grand Opening on Wednesday, April 11, 2012. There are now 13 centers in Hillsborough County to provide medical care for underserved residents. The clinic is located in Sulphur Springs at 8108 N. President Barack Obama was in town on Friday to talk about business coming to the Port of Tampa. He spoke to a group of supporters at the Tampa Port Authority. But prior to meeting with the excited crowd, the President met with some union workers from ILA Local 1402, James Harrell, President. Fifth Third Bank presented a $2,000 donation to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) recently at the Fifth Third – Lee Roy Selmon Banking Center. Shalonda Love, the winning caller on Tampa Bays’ 95.7 “The Beat” (WBTP-FM) during Fifth Third Bank’s African-American History Maker Campaign, selected the UNCF as the organization to received the donation. Ms. Love was one of 20 $50 MasterCard gift card winners and the $1,000 grand prize winner chosen at the end of the month. Both checks were presented during this presentation. The Gamma Omicron Boule of Signa Pi Phi Fraternity, Inc. presented the 25th Annual Dr. Carter G. Woodson Lecture Series on Saturday, March 31, 2012. The event was held at the downtown Hyatt Hotel.
