CLASS MEMBERS WORSHIP AT MOUNT TABOR M. B. CHURCH

Recently, graduates of 1972 held their All-Class 40th Reunion. The class members took part in numerous planned events designed for those returning home for the events. The group shared several events with students from several schools including Tampa Bay Technical, King, Blake, Robinson, Hillsborough, Middleton, Chamberlain, and Plant High Schools. COMMUNITY WELCOMES NEW TEACHERS TO EAST TAMPA

The 2012 East Tampa Community welcomed new teachers, principals and support staff during a recent breakfast at Orange Grove Middle Magnet School, Dr. Scott Rudes, principal. Superintendent MaryEllen Elia and Pastor Essie Sims, Jr., Chairman of the East Tampa Community Revitalization Partnership, were among those a part of the program. The Mistress of Ceremony for the program was Carla Jackson, City of Tampa Neighborhood Liaison. Evangeline R. Best is founder of this 9th annual event. COUPLES’ MINISTRY CELEBRATES ANOTHER YEAR

Last Sunday, August 19, 2012, the Couples’ Ministry of Allen Temple AME Church celebrated another year together. The couple married the longest was honored for 63 years of wedded bliss. George and Mary Louise King were united in marriage in Chattanooga, TN. They are parents of four children and four grandchildren. Couples attending the worship service were: seated, Rev. David Green (Pastor), his wife, Kimberly Green, the honorees, Mary Louise King and George King. TAMPA HOUSING AUTHORITY RECOGNIZES HOUSING HEROES

Last Friday, three students were recognized by the Tampa Housing Authority as “Housing Heroes.” Each of the students were presented a scholarships during the luncheon. Mrs. Karen Jackson Sims, Deputy Regional Administrator for Housing and Urban Development, delivered the keynote address. The students recognized as Housing Heroes were Ms. Courtni Jenkins, a graduate of Blake High School; James Eliassaint, and Derrell Thompson, both graduates of Tampa Bay Technical High School. MAYOR BOB BUCKHORN VISITS WITH SENTINEL EDITORIAL BOARD

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn met with the Sentinel Editorial Board on Tuesday, August 14, 2012, to share specifics of the City’s 2013 Budget. In addition to not having to lay off any employees, the Mayor said he is able to give his senior staff, who did not get an increase in the last budget, an increase this year. STUDENTS GET SCHOOL SUPPLIES FROM THE TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers distributed about 5,000 book bags last week to various nonprofit organizations and recreation centers throughout the area. Each bag was filled with a variety of school supplies. A group of young people from the Jackson Heights NFL-YET Center were there to receive their book bags. 4th ANNUAL OLD SCHOOL COOKOUT AND PICNIC

A group of West Tampa and Carver City friends came together recently for their 4th Annual Old School Cookout and Picnic. The group grew up together, went to school together and maintained their friendship through the years. They decided to hold a picnic and dance to bring the communities together. The cookout was held at MacFarlane Park. Later in the evening, the group mingled with about 500 people for the dance. MIDDLETON HIGH CLASS OF 1972 AND 1973 HAVE 40th-YEAR REUNION

With the onset of desegregation at the beginning of the 1971-72 school year in the Hillsborough County School District, those students who would have graduated as Tigers from Middleton High School in 1972 and 1973 were denied that opportunity. The students were displaced throughout the county, but they maintained a friendship. The weekend of July 20-22, 2012, about 60 of the former students, many from out of town, gathered at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Sabal Park for their 40th-year reunion. There was a Meet and Greet on Friday, Games and Activities and Banquet on Saturday and Worship at New Hope on Sunday.
