The Healthy Start Coalition of Hillsborough County in partnership with REACHUP, Inc. held its ‘You Care’ Campaign Kick Off on Friday, August 2, 2013 at the Glazer Children’s Museum. Healthy Start received a grant in the amount of $75,000 from Hillsborough County Department of Health’s Office of Health Equity. The grant targets African-American women whose babies are at the highest risk for poor birth outcomes. Among those who attended the kickoff event were: Jane Murphy, Dr. Leslie Gordon, State Representative Betty Reed, Lo Berry, Deborah Austin, Ph.D., Conchita Boyner, Candice Simon, Caitlin Murray (representing Senator Jeff Brandes), Lisa Colen, Jessica Reynolds, and Kassandra Timothe (representing Senator Arthenia Joyner). For the first time in more than 10 years, the Belmont Heights Little League hosted the District 13 All-Star Tournament for the major and junior divisions.

Recently, members of the Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners honored retired educator Dr. Walter L. Smith, during its regular board meeting. The Commendation recognized the accomplishments and contributions Dr. Smith has made during his lifetime, locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally. He is the former president of Florida A & M University. Dr. Walter and Mrs. Barbara Smith are shown with Hillsborough County Commissioners after the presentation. Shown standing on the back row are from left to right: Commissioner Al Higginbotham, Commissioner Kevin Beckner, Commissioner Sandra Murman, Commissioner Ken Hagan, Commissioner Victor Crist, and Commissioner Mark Sharpe. A service and ceremony for the elevation of Elder Michelle B. Patty to the office of Bishop was held Saturday, July 27, 2013 at the Downtown Hilton (formerly Hyatt) Hotel. WILBERT DAVIS BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB HOSTS 15th ANNUAL TALENT SHOWCASE
A variety of talent was on display Wednesday, July 24, 2013 when the Wilbert Davis Boys and Girls Club hosted its 15th Annual Showcase. After all the spoken word, singers, rappers, dancers and steppers had shown their talents, the winners were announced. The first place trophy went to Star Diva Step Team. The second place trophy was presented to Sigma Phi Sweethearts. The Tampa Police Department held graduation exercises for its Inaugural Youth Adult Citizens Academy on July 16th. The ceremony was held at the department’s training facility at 116 S. 34th Street. The twenty graduates received a Certificate of Completion and a tablet computer. The Rally in honor of Trayvon Martin was held on Saturday, July 20, 2013 on the steps of the Sam Gibbons Federal Courthouse, in downtown Tampa, drew a crowd of more than 1,500 participants. There were several speakers and presenters. The rally was held to demand justice in America following the “not guilty” verdict against George Zimmerman. Rallies were held simultaneously across America at 12 noon. Among those in attendance were: Mike Boone, K.
