The East Tampa Action Group, (ETAG), held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to showcase the N. 29th Street Revitalization Project on August 15th. The ceremony took place at the HOPE Center, N. 29th Street and E. Lake Avenue. The ceremony was to commemorate the taking back of the area once littered with broken glass, used syringes, and all types of debris. The project was successful because of the dedication and partnership between city government and citizens of East Tampa. Among those in attendance at the ceremony were from left to right: Ms. Mellita Mills, Co-Chairperson of the East Tampa Action Group; Mrs. Chloe Coney, founder of the Corporation to Develop Communities, Inc., who led the marches to clean up the area; Pastor Daniel Dean, Ms. Nikki-India Ross, of Moffitt Healthy Kidz; and Ms. Tonya Lewis, founder of Children With A Vision, Inc. On Saturday, August 24th, thousands and thousands of people from all over the nation lined both sides of the Reflecting Pool east of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the historic “March On Washington.” Fifty years before, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his historic “I Have A Dream” speech to hundreds of thousands of people. Julian Bond, a well-known activist, who was a member SNCC, (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) in 1963. SNCC was one of the sponsors of the original “March On Washington.”

Nearly 200,000 students returned to the classrooms of Hillsborough County this week. In an effort to help parents provide the necessary tools for the school year, several organizations held events to furnish youngsters with some of the tools they will need in order to be successful. Successful Women Around Tampa (SWAT) was one of those organizations that provided school supplies. The organization hosted their Book Bag Drive at Potter Elementary School on August 19th. Some members of SWAT who participated in the event shown in the photograph are Laquanda Mallard, Carla Griffith, Riane Nicole, and Roshandra Anderson.
