CALIFORNIA — Theresa Deloach-Reed, 52, was named chief of the Oakland city fire department. Reed has been fighting fires for nearly 30 years, has seen many changes on the job and calls her appointment “exciting.”
Reed is leaving her position as assistant fire chief of San Jose, California. She said that her career as a firefighter began when her brother asked her to pass an application along to another brother.
In 1986, Reed was working a job for a telephone company that involved her climbing poles to install new lines. Afraid of layoffs and with climbing experience, she decided to fill out the application herself.

Embattled church leader Eddie Long has apologized for participating in a ceremony at his church where he was declared a king and wrapped in a “Holocaust Torah.”
“The ceremony was not my suggestion, nor was it my intent, to participate in any ritual that is offensive in any manner to the Jewish community, or any group,”said Long on Sunday.
“Furthermore, I sincerely denounce any action that depicts me as a King, for I am merely just a servant of the Lord”
The apology came in the form of a letter to Bill Nigut, southeast regional director of the Anti-Defamation League.

WISCONSIN — A 19-year-old mother of two in Milwaukee called 911 after a brick was thrown through her bathroom window and someone began kicking her front door.
But when the cops came, one of them raped the woman.
Within minutes, two police officers responded. One took her 15-year-old brother outside to speak to him. The other cop, Police Officer Ladmarald Cates, gave her boyfriend $10 and told him to go the store and get some water.
Cates asked to see the broken window and she led him down a narrow hallway to a bathroom in the back.
The cop she had summoned to protect her instead chose this moment to grab the back of her head by her hair and sodomize her. Then he raped her.
The cop’s partner had become concerned when he did not immediately see Cates and called for back-up. Other cops began arriving and saw a woman screaming incoherently about being raped.
She was handcuffed and taken in, told at the stationhouse that she was being charged with assaulting a police officer.

SEATTLE — A woman has won $975,000 in a federal jury trial, 14 years after giving birth in a jail cell in Washington state.
A jury agreed Friday on nine of 10 counts in Imka Pope’s civil rights case against King County. Pope says jail nurses and corrections officers violated her civil rights in 1997 by dismissing her claims that she was pregnant.
She had been arrested for sleeping on a bench at a Metro bus stop. In the lawsuit she filed in 2007, Pope said jail health officials locked her in a cell and ignored her for six days. She got help after a guard heard a baby crying.
Her mental illness has delayed the case. It went to trial once previously, but at that time Pope was involuntarily committed to Harborview Medical Center.

Now we know First Lady Michelle Obama means business when it comes to physical health. While Mrs. Obama was a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to promote her “Let’s Move” healthy eating campaign, Ellen DeGeneres made a friendly push-up contest challenge to the First Lady.
“How many push-ups can you do? Because I like to do a push up,” said DeGeneres. Michelle coyly replies, “Well um you know, I don’t know. I can do some — can you?” The First Lady then gently teased DeGeneres, “You know it depends on how your back is, because I know you have these back issues.” “Oh no,” said DeGeneres, who popped out of her seat and sprung into action.
By the time they finish, First Lady Michelle Obama tallies 25 push ups. “How amazing is that!?” said DeGeneres.
