COLUMBUS, Ohio—Plunging into his campaign for a new term, President Barack Obama tore into Mitt Romney on Saturday as a willing and eager “rubber stamp” for conservative Republicans in Congress and an agenda to cut taxes for the rich, reduce spending on education and Medicare and enhance power that big banks and insurers hold over consumers.
But Pres. Obama said his rival was merely doing the bidding of the conservative powerbrokers in Congress and has little understanding of the struggles of average Americans. “Why else would he want to cut his own taxes while raising them for 18 million Americans,” Pres. Obama said of his multimillionaire opponent.
The president’s campaign chose Ohio State University and Virginia Commonwealth University for the back-to-back rallies. Pres. Obama won both states in his successful race in 2008, although both have elected Republican governors since, and are expected to be hotly contested in the fall.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida’s improving unemployment rate may be good news for most people, but it will have a negative effect on many of the estimated 836,000 workers who remain jobless.
That’s because Florida no longer qualifies for federal extended benefits because of its lower jobless rate, which is likely to reduce state benefits as well.
Those two factors are compounded by the impending expiration of federal emergency unemployment compensation at the end of the year.
Unless Congress extends the emergency benefits, the net effect could be a reduction in combined state and federal compensation, which once offered up to 99 weeks of benefits, to 20 weeks or less for Florida workers who lose their jobs in 2013 or beyond. Those currently drawing compensation or who apply before the end of this year are facing less drastic reductions.

Desmond Hatchett, 29, has almost two dozen children by 11 different women, unfortunately his minimum wage job doesn’t allow him to take care of them all.
His 21 children range in age from newborn to 11 and Hatchett holds court as the biggest deadbeat at the Knox County Juvenile Child Support Court in Tennessee.
The state of Tennessee can’t stop him from pro-creating, but they can make sure that he stays in jail — or court — unless he pays the mothers. Friday, Hatchett appeared 11 times to settle with about 15 of children, with nothing but a $400 check. He waited behind bars while a “child support referee” decided how to split the check between the women.
By the time his check is garnished monthly, some of the mothers get only $1.98 a month.

A Houston family opted out of the 17 percent gratuity added to their bill, and were locked inside of the restaurant for not coughing up the money.
Jasmine Marks and her family were dining at the La Fisherman restaurant, and were unhappy with what they claim was bad service. Rather than covering the mandatory tip amount for parties of five or more, the group attempted to leave and were stopped by a worker before reaching the door. “She was like, ‘You have an unsettled bill and ya’ll can’t leave until you pay it,'” Marks said. “We paid our bill for what we ate, we paid the bill.” Unhappy with their reasoning, the employee contacted the local police. “She said, ‘That’s fine. If you don’t want to pay the gratuity we have HPD outside.’I asked the police officer twice, maybe three times, is it against the law if we don’t pay the gratuity and he never gave me a straight answer.”
The family conceded to paying the 17 percent tip in an effort to avoid further trouble.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama has a new campaign slogan: “Forward.”
Pres. Obama’s re-election team unveiled its new motto in a video released Monday morning. The seven-minute video begins by recalling the grim state of the nation’s economy when Pres. Obama took office, then ticks through what the campaign says are the President’s accomplishments, both on the economy and other issues.
The campaign also uses the video to target congressional Republicans, saying Pres. Obama had to overcome GOP obstruction on Capitol Hill in order to pass legislation.

The first woman to lead the U. S. Army’s drill sergeant training is taking legal action against her employers, citing sexism and racism.
Command Sgt. Maj. Teresa King, alleges that she was unlawfully suspended last November, and filed a legal complaint with the Army on April 30th.
King made headlines back in 2009 for becoming the first woman to head the Drill Sergeant School in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. According to her lawyer, James Smith, King became the victim of discrimination at the hands of Maj. Gen. Richard Longo, and Command Sgt. Maj. John Calpena — both of whom led an investigation which commenced with disciplinary action. “It’s abundantly clear that there was nothing to warrant her removal. The Army should reinstate her and restore her honorable name,” Smith said.
