MIAMI — Only marijuana was found in the system of a Florida man shot while chewing another man’s face, according to a medical examiner’s report released Tuesday.
The active components of marijuana were identified in the system of Rudy Eugene, according to toxicology results released by the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner. The laboratory tested for but did not detect any other street drugs, alcohol or prescription drugs, or any adulterants found in street drugs in Eugene, the 31-year-old who friends said was religious and read both the Bible and Quran.
The department ruled out the most common components found in the street drugs known as bath salts. An outside forensic toxicology lab, which took a second look at the results, also confirmed the absence of bath salts, synthetic marijuana and LSD.

Deshawn Balka, 25, is suing both Clayton County, Ga., and Sheriff Kem Kimbrough for allegedly taking inadequate care of her baby after she prematurely gave birth to her son, who later died.
In April, Balka was arrested for violating probation on a marijuana possession sentence. At the time, Balka was five months pregnant. As she stayed in the Clayton County jail, she began to experience contractions, and reportedly called out for help in vain.
Three hours later, Balka was in full labor, delivering her son in to the jail toilet.
According to Balka, even after the child was born, it still took between five to 10 minutes for jail staff to assist her.
As a result, Balka’s baby died, and she is still mourning the loss of what would have been her first child. She said, “I wish and I pray that I would have gotten the care that I requested.”

Marine reservist Brian Corder, 26, is accused of conspiring with Fredericka Carmouche, 19 and Stephon Crutchfield, 21, to murder his pregnant girlfriend.
On June 16, police responded to a 911 call that a woman was screaming in an apartment in California.
When they arrived, they found a 4-months pregnant woman lying on the floor in a pool of blood. According to police, she was so badly beaten, they thought she was dead.”She was in really bad condition,” said LAPD detective Chris Casey.
The trio allegedly used items like a frying pan and a lamp to make the assault look like a break-in, police said.
Corder’s pregnant wife was severely beaten, Casey said. Paramedics rushed her to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
“It’s, at times, unconscionable that someone would attack a pregnant woman knowing that not only it’s her life but it’s also a future life,” said LAPD detective Stephanie Diaz.

Wanda Dueno is her own hero. The 24-year-old delivered a healthy baby boy by herself on a New York City subway car on Wednesday morning, when she realized that her child was on its way, reports the New York Post.
Dueno was en route to her sister’s home in the Bronx at around 1:30 a.m., when she suddenly felt some contractions. Having already given birth to another child, Dueno was only too familiar with the pangs.
Although the young woman was not due for five days, she was certain that her labor was imminent but no one was in the subway car with her to offer assistance.
As the contractions increased Dueno says that she tried desperately to keep the baby from coming out but her efforts were useless. She made several attempts to hit the subway’s emergency intercom button, which contacts the conductor, but he arrived too late.
By the time the train conductor went to investigate who had been trying to summon him, Dueno had the infant child in her arms.

In a dramatic victory for President Barack Obama, the Supreme Court upheld the 2010 health care law Thursday, preserving Obama’s landmark legislative achievement.
The majority opinion was written by Chief Justice John Roberts, who held that the law was a valid exercise of Congress’s power to tax.
The decision came as a sharp rebuff and disappointment to congressional Republicans, many of whom had expected the court to strike down at least some parts of the law.
Passage of the law in 2010 had come at a high political cost, with 14 House Democrats in competitive districts losing their seats in the 2010 elections in part due to their votes for the bill and six Democratic Senate candidates who’d voted for the bill also lost their elections in 2010.

Houston Pastor Charles Gilford, 58 and his wife, Adriane, 53, were arrested and charged with bilking their former congregation out of $430,000 in church funds and using them for gambling trips to Louisiana, according to reports.
The couple stands accused of aggregate theft and misapplication of fiduciary property. They allegedly used the monies donated by their flock to gamble at the Coushatta Casino between 2004 and 2007, when they served as pastor and first lady of the Bethel Institutional Missionary Baptist Church.
The church is a Houston staple that has been standing for decades with a faithful following. It served as the Gilford’s home church for the three-year period when they allegedly robbed it of its funds.
Many of the Gilford’s friends are shocked and taken aback by the allegations against the pair who have otherwise maintained an overtly pristine reputation. After state prosecutors poured over the extensive financial records of the church and delved in to the pasts of the Gilfords, though, they learned some eye-opening facts that could put the pair away on charges that carry anywhere from 5 years to life in prison if convicted by a grand jury.

When Rodney King, 47, passed away on June 17th from an alleged drowning, little did the public know that he was broke. King, who was brutally beaten by the Los Angeles police department in 1991, has died penniless.
Now his family members need money to lay his body in the ground.
After his videotaped beating, the troubled King sued — and won — $3.8 million from the LAPD. Yet King’s family members, his three grown daughters, along with other extended relatives, say that the funeral expenses will run upward of $22,000 and they cannot afford to cover the exorbitant costs.
The family has now resorted to asking the public to donate to a memorial fund for the deceased so that he can receive a proper burial.
According to King family representative Kali Bowyer, “They need the money.”
The family has planned the burial for June 30th at Forest Lawn cemetery in Hollywood Hills, where such legendary celebrities as the King of Pop Michael Jackson are buried.
The funeral will be open to the public.

DENVER — A 21-year-old man was arrested for investigation of first-degree murder, after a veteran Denver policewoman who was raising her 12-year-old daughter alone was shot and killed during a free jazz festival, police said Monday.
Suspect Rollen Oliver was taken into custody late Sunday after witnesses gave a description of the gunman. Police also recovered a gun and said they believe Oliver was the only person involved in the attack.
Police Chief Robert White said investigators were not sure if Officer Celena Hollis was the target of the shooting when she answered a call about a disturbance in the park.
“There was a tragic event last night and a beautiful young, single mother and a valuable member of the Denver Police Department lost her life,” Public Safety Manager Alex Martinez said. Authorities said they did not know the cause of the disturbance.
Oliver appeared in court Monday and was ordered held without bond. District attorney’s spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough said a decision on charges was not expected until later this week.
Oliver was escorted into the courtroom by six deputies, all wearing black and blue bands of mourning over their badges.

Loretta Robinson, whose son was killed by a drunk driver, had to pay to clean her son’s blood from the road, as well as other fees associated with the wreck. Robinson’s son was not at fault.
The driver, Anna Gonzalez, pleaded guilty in court on Tuesday and faces 17 years in prison. During the court hearing, Robinson showed the judge the bills she has had to pay as a result of Gonzalez’s actions. Gonzalez was an illegal immigrant who has been living in the U. S. for 12 years and never owned a South Carolina driver’s license.
Even though Robinson’s son, Justin Walker, was not at fault, she had to pay for the wrecked car to be stored for months, in case there was a trial.
“I had to pay to have the vehicle towed,” she said. “I had to pay for the vehicle to be removed and to clean up the street from Justin’s blood on the ground.”
Robinson said that was the bill that stung the most – paying $50 to have the street cleaned.
“First of all, having to open the mail and look at the charge to the deceased, Justin Darryl Walker — the deceased! It’s just a hard thing to deal with in the context of your child,” she said.
