LOS ANGELES  — The screams of women and children didn’t cause a 100-year-old driver to stop as he backed his Cadillac onto a sidewalk across from an elementary school and hit 11 people, including nine children.

So people began pounding on his windows screaming for him to stop, a witness said.

Alma Solache said she was buying her children an afterschool snack Wednesday just before the accident outside a South Los Angeles school.

“He was not paying attention,” said Solache, 24, adding that it was at least two or three seconds before the vehicle halted and people began pulling children out from beneath the car.

Four of the children were in critical condition when firefighters arrived but they were stabilized and were in serious condition at a hospital, city fire Capt. Jaime Moore said. Everyone was expected to survive, he said.

ORLANDO, FL — A new judge has been assigned to oversee the case of George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watch volunteer charged with killing Trayvon Martin.

Debra S. Nelson, a 13-year judicial veteran, was assigned to Zimmerman’s case Thursday. A day earlier, an appeals court granted his attorney’s request for Judge Kenneth Lester to disqualify himself.

Attorney Mark O’Mara had asked the court earlier this month to overturn Lester’s decision not to leave the case. O’Mara contended that the judge made disparaging remarks about Zimmerman’s character and advocated for additional charges against him in setting his $1 million bond in July.

Two judges on a three-judge appeals panel agreed in an opinion issued Wednesday.

OREGON – A Portland, Oregon mother says she punched a man who was trying to abduct her 6-year old Sunday night. The girl had been playing outside at a friend’s house when the young man grabbed her just before 6:30 p.m. and tried to pull her into the bushes according to police.

“I thought I heard something and then I looked and the man had my daughter in a bush with his hand over her mouth & around her waist,” Antoinette Robinson said. “I jumped up and ran out of the house and I just socked him in his face. Then I went to go hit him again and he let her go and we both rolled down the hill.”

The suspect ran off after releasing the girl. After that, Robinson said she jumped into a car with neighbors and chased him down.

“I got out with a 2×4 and I broke it over him, I’m not going to lie, I just went over there and I just stomped him in his face and mouth,” Robinson said.

The neighbors tackled the suspect and held him down until police arrived, according to Lt. Robert King with the Portland Police Bureau.

Police arrested the 17-year-old suspect on kidnap and aggravated harassment charges.

LUDOWICI, GA — Four Army soldiers based in southeast Georgia killed a former comrade and his girlfriend to protect an anarchist militia group they formed that stockpiled assault weapons and plotted a range of anti-government attacks, prosecutors told a judge Monday.

Prosecutors in rural Long County, near the sprawling Army post Fort Stewart, said the militia group of active and former U.S. military members spent at least $87,000 buying guns and bomb components. They allege the group was serious enough to kill two people — former soldier Michael Roark and his 17-year-old girlfriend, Tiffany York — by shooting them in the woods last December in order to keep its plans secret.

Prosecutors said the group called itself F.E.A.R., short for Forever Enduring Always Ready. Prosecutor Isabel Pauley said authorities don’t know how many members it had.

All are charged by state authorities with malice murder, felony murder, criminal gang activity, aggravated assault and using a firearm while committing a felony.

The prosecutor said the militia group had big plans. It plotted to take over Fort Stewart by seizing its ammunition control point and talked of bombing the Forsyth Park fountain in nearby Savannah, she said. In Washington state, she added, the group plotted to bomb a dam and poison the state’s apple crop. Ultimately, prosecutors said, the militia’s goal was to overthrow the government and assassinate the President.

Friends, family and supporters of Morris Brown College converged on the school’s campus over the weekend for a special “National Day of Prayer.”

Saturday’s event, which was described as a prayer vigil, attracted hundreds keen to show their support for the historic black college as it struggles to stay afloat. Among the crowd were alumni, some of whom were students over 50 years ago, as well as recent graduates.

The highlight of the day was a keynote address by Preston W. Williams II, the newly appointed Chairman of the Board of Trustees. In his impassioned speech, he outlined plans for the school to file for bankruptcy to avert a “significant portion” of its campus going into foreclosure next month.

The college, which is more than $30 million in debt, was facing foreclosure on September 4 after investors called $13 million worth of bonds tied to the school.

Morris Brown was founded in 1881 by freed slaves, and is one of the nation’s oldest historically black colleges.

NASHVILLE, Tennessee — A U.S. man says he has discovered the audio tape of a forgotten interview with civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. that was never published.

Stephon Tull says he recently found the nearly pristine reel-to-reel recording in his father’s attic in Tennessee. His father interviewed King in 1960 for a never-written memoir.

The tape captures King talking about the civil rights movement and relations with Africa. New York collector Keya Morgan authenticated the tape and is arranging a private sale.

Raymond Winbush of the Institute for Urban Research says there are few recordings of King speaking about the civil rights movement’s global impact.

On tape, King says of the struggle, “… historians will have to record this movement as one of the greatest epics of our heritage.”

WASHINGTON — The federal trial over South Carolina’s voter identification law got under way Monday with a state senator insisting his work on the law was aimed at fighting fraud and instilling public confidence in the election system.

During morning testimony, state Sen. George “Chip” Campsen, III cited examples of fraud that he took into consideration while drafting early versions of South Carolina’s law.

These included vote buying, voter rolls indicating a woman who showed up at the polls had already voted, and press reports of voters being registered in both South Carolina and North Carolina.

But under questioning from Justice Department attorney Anna Baldwin, Campsen, a Republican, said the examples he gave did not involve the type of fraud that requiring photo identification would address.

“None of the examples you gave in your testimony involved incidents of impersonation?” Baldwin asked.

“Correct,” Campsen answered. He also said he could not find cases of voter impersonation in South Carolina, but added that the state lacks the tools to root them out.

The Justice Department rejected South Carolina’s law, passed last year, which requires specific photo identification be shown in order to vote. The department decided the law violates Section 5 of the federal Voting Rights Act, which protects minority voters. South Carolina’s voter photo ID law was subject to approval from the Justice Department because of its history of racial discrimination.

Ernest Osel Addo was arrested at his home in Austell, Ga., for allegedly posing as a doctor in South Carolina for more than six months, according to the newspaper The State.

Authorities say that Addo, 48, was employed by Agape Senior, a company that operates 23 assisted living, skilled nursing care, rehab and hospice facilities in the state. When he was hired in February of 2012, Addo allegedly provided Agape Senior the credentials of an Orangeburg, S.C., man who was licensed to practice medicine in the state.

For more than six months, Addo allegedly treated more than 500 patients at five Agape Senior facilities in South Carolina. He came under the authorities’ radar when the Orangeburg doctor reported that Addo stole his identity to practice medicine and used his name for credit card purchases.
