{"id":8874,"date":"2011-08-01T18:45:34","date_gmt":"2011-08-01T22:45:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=8874"},"modified":"2011-08-01T18:46:03","modified_gmt":"2011-08-01T22:46:03","slug":"city-council-delays-panhandling-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=8874","title":{"rendered":"City Council Delays Pan- handling Vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last Thursday, the Tampa City Council decided to postpone next week\u2019s vote on a proposed citywide panhandling ban after a last minute challenge to proposed restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>This week, Council members were supposed to consider two proposed options aimed at reducing the number of beggars on the city\u2019s streets.<\/p>\n<p>One proposal would repeal the city\u2019s existing rules on roadway solicitation, making Hillsborough County\u2019s seven-day ban enforceable on Tampa\u2019s roads. The other would be a six-day ban, excluding Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>However, the threat of litigation from a lawyer representing several labor unions \u2013 who urge they would be prevented from protesting or handing out informational leaflets under both of the proposed panhandling bans \u2013 has forced city officials back to the drawing board.<\/p>\n<p>Council members will revisit the issue at a September 8<sup>th<\/sup> workshop, when they will consider a possible third option that addresses the constitutional arguments raised by the unions. <strong>[private]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mayor Bob Buckhorn<\/strong> favors a seven-day ban and has said he understands the issue is complicated, but the community wants the Council to come up with a solution.<\/p>\n<p>City Councilman <strong>Frank Reddick<\/strong> said he\u2019s received several calls asking that he and his colleagues not rush on a decision.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Councilman Reddick<\/strong> said the Council will have their actual vote September 22<sup>nd<\/sup>.<em><\/em> <strong>[\/private]<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last Thursday, the Tampa City Council decided to postpone next week\u2019s vote on a proposed citywide panhandling ban after a last minute challenge to proposed restrictions.
