{"id":8167,"date":"2011-07-05T08:48:46","date_gmt":"2011-07-05T12:48:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=8167"},"modified":"2011-07-05T08:50:49","modified_gmt":"2011-07-05T12:50:49","slug":"memorial-for-fallen-officers-unveiled-at-district-iii-headquarters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=8167","title":{"rendered":"Memorial For Fallen Officers Unveiled At District III Head- quarters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday, June 29th, <strong>Mayor Bob Buckhorn<\/strong>, Tampa <strong>Police Chief Jane Castor<\/strong>, District III Commander, <strong>Major Gerald Honeywell<\/strong>, and 200 officers, family and friends gathered at the District III Headquarters, 3808 North 22nd Street to attend a special ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>At 6:30 p. m., the \u201cHallway Of Heroes\u201d was unveiled in honor of slain police officers <strong>Dave Curtis<\/strong> and <strong>Jeff Kocab<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony and unveiling marked the one year anniversary of that fatal night.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dontae Morris<\/strong>, the lone shooter, is awaiting trial for the officers\u2019 murder.<\/p>\n<p>The Hallway Of Heroes was the brainchild of <strong>Officer Bill Logan<\/strong> and <strong>Detective Steve Power<\/strong>. Tampa <strong>Police Corporal Les Richardson<\/strong> painted a mural along the entryway to District III where <strong>Curtis<\/strong> and <strong>Kocab<\/strong> worked. There is also a glass etching with <strong>Kocab<\/strong> and <strong>Curtis\u2019s<\/strong> badges illuminated with a blue LED light. Tampa<strong> Police Detective Larry Brass<\/strong> created the officer\u2019s badges with pavers in the walkway leading into the Hallway of Heroes.<strong>[private]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This project was phase one of the memorial. Groundbreaking on a phase two memorial garden will start next month. <strong>Kocab<\/strong> and <strong>Curtis\u2019s<\/strong> squad came up with the idea for the garden as a place for quiet reflection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Major Honeywell<\/strong> said he told his troops to run with it when they approached him with the idea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey did a real professional job. They spoke, set everything up, got the word out, and cleaned up afterwards.<br \/>\n\u201cI was asked to speak, but I was too emotional for that. What I say comes from my heart, and I knew I wouldn\u2019t be able to maintain my composure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Major Honeywell<\/strong> said it was an awesome ceremony, and he\u2019s proud of everyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo my surprise, we had more than 200 people show up, including former Mayor, <strong>Pam Iorio<\/strong>, and representatives from the Hillsborough County Sheriff\u2019s Office. It was good to see that kind of community support. I think this project shows that we are indeed a family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Major Honeywell <\/strong>said the proposed memorial garden will be slightly different than the one for <strong>Corporal Mike Roberts<\/strong> at the District II Headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the Hallway of Heroes is something we can all be very proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The garden and the Hallway of Heroes were strategically placed. As officers pull into District III each day, they will drive by the garden.
