CREWS<br \/>\nSentinel Staff Writer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Middleton High School baseball coach,<strong> Vernon Slater<\/strong>, is a very happy man. Of the 25 baseball players from Hillsborough County that played in last Wednesday\u2019s Senior All-Star Game, three came from Middleton. The only other Hillsborough County School sending three players is King.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coach Slater<\/strong> said he and five other coaches from Middleton selected infielder <strong>Jordan Morrell<\/strong>, pitcher <strong>Eric Comstock<\/strong>, and outfielder Demetre Taylor to represent Middleton.<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Taylor<\/strong>, who also plays football, has been given a football scholarship to Eastern Illinois State University where he\u2019ll also be able to play baseball.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m alright going that far from home, although I am a momma\u2019s boy,\u201d said<strong> Taylor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eric Comstock <\/strong>will be attending Eastern Michigan University on a full scholarship, and<strong> Morrell<\/strong> said although he\u2019s committed to the University of South Florida, he\u2019s still not sure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of the Major League scouts were there and that\u2019s big with the draft coming up,\u201d said <strong>Coach Slater<\/strong>. \u201cThere were also scouts from junior colleges and universities evaluating the players. But, this game was mostly for the Major League Baseball draft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coach Slater<\/strong> said this is the fifth year the game has been played and this year it was held at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHillsborough County has won the tournament every year,\u201d said <strong>Coach Slater<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was my first year selected to coach at the game. This was also an excellent opportunity to promote the program at Middleton. We\u2019ve had more than 17 players who\u2019ve either gotten scholarships or signed Major League contracts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taylor\u2019s<\/strong> mother, <strong>Ms. Joyce Taylor,<\/strong> said the coaching staff at Middleton deserves all the credit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY LEON B .
