{"id":5350,"date":"2011-04-07T14:39:53","date_gmt":"2011-04-07T18:39:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=5350"},"modified":"2011-04-07T14:39:53","modified_gmt":"2011-04-07T18:39:53","slug":"1-of-5-charges-tossed-out-in-bonds-perjury-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=5350","title":{"rendered":"1 Of 5 Charges Tossed Out In Bonds Perjury Trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SAN FRANCISCO \u2014 A federal judge has granted prosecutors\u2019 request to dismiss one of the charges against <strong>Barry Bonds<\/strong> in his federal trial for allegedly lying to a grand jury.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. District <strong>Judge Susan Illston<\/strong> approved the request Wednesday morning, which prosecutors made after it became clear the judge was going to rule that they failed to prove a count that charged the home run king with lying when he denied his personal trainer, <strong>Greg Anderson<\/strong>, induced him \u201cto take anything before the 2003 season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors argued that charge meant that<strong> Bonds <\/strong>would be guilty to have knowingly taken any steroid prior to 2003. But the judge disagreed, ruling that the charge alleged <strong>Bonds<\/strong> willfully used designer steroids dubbed \u201cthe cream\u201d or \u201cthe clear\u201d before the 2003.<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bonds<\/strong> admitted inadvertently taking designer steroids in 2003, but denied any use before then.<\/p>\n<p>The jury will now consider four charges against<strong> Bonds<\/strong>. Two accuse him of lying about knowingly taking performance-enhancing drugs, a third charges him with lying about being injected by anyone, but his doctors and the last is a catchall obstruction charge.<\/p>\n<p>The owner of the major league mark for home runs in a season and a career has pleaded not guilty to three charges of lying to a grand jury in 2003, when he denied knowingly using steroids and human growth hormone.
