{"id":3955,"date":"2011-02-28T16:20:34","date_gmt":"2011-02-28T21:20:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=3955"},"modified":"2011-02-28T16:21:03","modified_gmt":"2011-02-28T21:21:03","slug":"ex-nfl-great%e2%80%99s-suicide-was-result-of-poor-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=3955","title":{"rendered":"Ex-NFL Great\u2019s Suicide Was Result Of Poor Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was 3 o\u2019clock last Friday morning when <strong>Alicia Duerson\u2019s <\/strong>iPhone flashed with a text message from her ex-husband, <strong>Dave Duerson<\/strong> in Florida.<br \/>\nShe was confused when she woke up and read the words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe text said that he loved me and he loved the kids and for me to love the kids,\u201d she recalled. \u201cAnd that he thought there was something wrong with the left side of his brain and for me to please get his brain to the NFL.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sent the text to her son, <strong>Tregg<\/strong>, and together they tried to get a hold of <strong>Dave Duerson<\/strong>, but there was no answer. Hours later, his body was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the chest.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a well-publicized domestic dispute, divorce and personal bankruptcy, his family believes it was his failing health that led the former Pro Bowl Safety for the Chicago Bears to take his own life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was tortured inside,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Duerson<\/strong> says she and her ex-husband remained very good friends despite the split.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancially, <strong>Dave<\/strong> was dealing with it,\u201d she insists. \u201cI don\u2019t think it was to the point he would take his life. He\u2019d already been through the tough part of it. It couldn\u2019t have been just that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly it became clearer, as <strong>Alicia Duerson<\/strong> recalled a situation recently when they were having coffee together in suburban Chicago. <strong>Duerson <\/strong>told his ex-wife about vision and memory problems.<\/p>\n<p>He talked to me a lot about blurred vision, and he had to go somewhere in the city and he couldn\u2019t remember how to get there. It was frustrating for him that he couldn\u2019t remember how to get there,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave Duerson<\/strong> served on the NFL\u2019s Board awarding benefits to former players. He was intimately aware of the symptoms of dementia caused by multiple hits to the head. His own father suffered from Alzheimer\u2019s disease before passing away last year. Yet he never reached out to get his own help.
