Former Tampa Bay Buccaneer, <strong>Harry Hamilton<\/strong> has volunteered in the Tampa community.<\/p>\n<p>Although he has not resided here since 1995, <strong>Hamilton, <\/strong>an attorney who resides in Pennsylvania, continues his c0mmitment and connection with Tampa.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Mrs. Carolyn Taylor, <\/strong>who has been at <strong>Hamilton<\/strong><strong>\u2019s <\/strong>side since the beginning, explained how it all got started.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe (she and husband, the late Roe Taylor) had taken a group of youngsters to the football game as vendors and a few of them were trying to get out of hand. After the game, <strong>Roe <\/strong>was reprimanding them when <strong>Harry\u2019s<\/strong> father (<strong>Dr.<\/strong> <strong>Stan Hamilton<\/strong>) passed by.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey struck up a conversation about training our young people and from there a friendship developed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen <strong>Harry<\/strong> came out, (the Bucs\u2019 locker room), his dad introduced him to <strong>Roe <\/strong>and me. <strong>Harry<\/strong> talked about wanting to do something to give back to the community in which he was a resident and that\u2019s how \u2018Project H\u2019 was founded,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>The first year, <strong>Hamilton<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>totally funded the event. The group provided the traditional Thanksgiving meal for 35 families with children.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hamilton<\/strong> says his desire to give back started with his family and upbringing. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter that I\u2019m no longer there. These people helped me when I was there, if it was no more than to say encouraging words or extend well wishes.\u201d[private]<\/p>\n<p>This year the food baskets were distributed from General Assembly Church on Main St. in West Tampa, after being in East Tampa a number of years. Fifty families received food for Thanksgiving and more than 75 received Christmas baskets, many of them also received toys for the children.<\/p>\n<p>At one point the volunteers distributed more than 250 boxes, but economic times limited donations. <strong>Mrs. Taylor<\/strong> says, \u201cthe Lord just multiplied that food. We planned to do 75 boxes, and went well over that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The RTJ Foundation, in memory of <strong>Roe Taylor,<\/strong> has partnered with Project H, and so did General Assembly Church.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hamilton<\/strong> continues to recall those who have been with him through the years and may have gone on to other projects: former teammate, <strong>Mark Robinson,<\/strong> who does a similar project in Clearwater; volunteer <strong>Azzie<\/strong> <strong>Northern,<\/strong> who now has Azzie\u2019s Angels, a similar organization. <strong>Robinson<\/strong> and another former teammate, <strong>Kevin Murphy, <\/strong>assist with the Project \u2018H\u2019 venture.<\/p>\n<p>The projects in New York, Pennsylvania and Tampa are now done in memory of <strong>Harry\u2019s<\/strong> father, who died about 2 years ago (\u201ca couple months after <strong>Mr. Taylor\u2019s<\/strong> accident\u201d).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hamilton<\/strong><strong> i<\/strong>s challenging former NFL players to \u201cmake a huge impact in whatever community they\u2019re situated.[\/private]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor For more than 20 years.
