{"id":23497,"date":"2013-08-15T15:26:15","date_gmt":"2013-08-15T19:26:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=23497"},"modified":"2013-08-15T15:26:15","modified_gmt":"2013-08-15T19:26:15","slug":"family-says-dekalb-teen-being-denied-heart-transplant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=23497","title":{"rendered":"Family Says DeKalb Teen Being Denied Heart Transplant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ATLANTA \u2014- A 15-year-old boy in DeKalb County is in desperate need of a heart transplant, but doctors say he doesn\u2019t qualify for the transplant list. <strong>Anthony Stokes<\/strong> is receiving treatment at Children\u2019s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors have told his family that<strong> Anthony<\/strong> has less than six months to live, but he can\u2019t be put on the transplant list because of a history of non-compliance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said they don\u2019t have any evidence that he would take his medicine or that he would go to his follow-ups,\u201d said <strong>Melencia Hamilton<\/strong>, <strong>Anthony\u2019s<\/strong> mother. <strong>Hamilton<\/strong> said that the transplant is the only fix for her son\u2019s enlarged heart.<\/p>\n<p>Keepers of the nation\u2019s transplant list have strict guidelines about who qualifies, and while doctors didn\u2019t specify the reason, family friends said they\u2019ve been told it\u2019s partly because <strong>Anthony<\/strong> has had low grades and trouble with the law.<\/p>\n<p>Children\u2019s Healthcare of Atlanta spokeswoman<strong> Patty Gregory<\/strong> said in a statement, \u201cThe well-being of our patients is always our first priority. We are continuing to work with this family and looking at all options regarding this patient\u2019s health care.
