The Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists in partnership with the George Edgecomb Bar Association will host a Community Forum on the Trayvon Martin-George<\/b> Zimmerman<\/b> case at 7 p. m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at the University of South Florida\u2019s Patel Center for Global Solutions.<\/p>\n
The forum, which is free to the public, will examine Florida’s \u2018Stand Your Ground\u2019 law, media coverage of the Zimmerman<\/b> trial and reflect on how the nation can move forward in the wake of the verdict.<\/p>\n
Participants in a panel-style discussion will include: Dr. Carolyn Collins,<\/b> president of the Hillsborough County Branch NAACP; Alec Hall,<\/b> a federal public defender; Joe Caimino,<\/b> a criminal defense attorney and the only Tampa resident on Gov.<\/b> Rick Scott\u2019s<\/b> \u2018Stand Your Ground\u2019 Task Force; and Ben Montgomery,<\/b> a Tampa Bay Times<\/i> reporter who covered the case.<\/p>\n
The event\u2019s moderator is Eric Deggans<\/b>, Tampa Bay<\/i> Times\u2019<\/i> TV\/media critic and author of \u201cRace-Baiter: How the Media Wields Dangerous Words to Divide a Nation.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
<\/i>Jenise G. Morgan, <\/b>President of the Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalist, said, \u201cThis should be an exciting discussion. We want to help the community understand the \u2018Stand Your Ground\u2019 law. I attended the National Association of Black Journalists Convention last week in Orlando and it seems as though many of the reporters are confused about the law and how it works.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis will be an opportunity for the community to come together to see where we\u2019re going as we move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n
