CREWS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sentinel Staff Writer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tampa attorney, <strong>Susan Johnson-Velez<\/strong>, has joined other local African Americans in making history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Atty. Johnson-Velez<\/strong> has been unanimously selected by her colleagues to be the new president of the Hillsborough County Bar Association, making her the first African American woman to hold that honor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Atty. Johnson-Velez<\/strong> said it is an honor to know that her colleagues are confident she is capable of leading the group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been committed to serving the bar for more than 20 years. I also appreciate the historic significance, and this is in line with what I teach my children to not accept failure or limitations, and to always strive to be the best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Atty. Johnson-Velez<\/strong> said it was while she was enrolled in college she decided to pursue a degree in law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew I loved to read and analyze things, so law seemed to be the right fit for me. I grew up in Texas, and attended law school in Missouri.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this career is ever changing, and it forces you to change with the times. You have to be adaptable and always have an open mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Atty. Johnson-Velez<\/strong> said there is a big connection between law and politics, ad that goes with the idea of the separation of the three levels of government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to always be very attentive to what\u2019s going on around you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs far as the future is concerned, I try not to plan too far ahead, and I just remain open and evaluate opportunities as they come along. I also try to stay very objective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Monday, June 24<sup>th<\/sup>, <strong>Atty.
