U. S. weather forecasters predict an extremely active season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said there is a 70% likelihood of 13 to 20 named storms, of which 7 to 11 could become hurricanes, including 3 to 6 major hurricanes.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the theme is: <strong><em>\u201cSurvive, Thrive, Stay Alive.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As you prepare for the hurricane season, several items should be included in your survival kit. Some of those basic items are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Water<\/strong> &#8212; at least 1 gallon per day, per person for drinking and sanitation<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food &#8212; <\/strong>Every home should have enough non-perishable food to last 3 to 7 days<\/p>\n<p><strong>Radios &#8212; <\/strong>Battery-operated or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flashlight<\/strong> and extra batteries<\/p>\n<p><strong>First Aid Kit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Whistle<\/strong> to signal for help<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dust mask <\/strong>to help filter contaminated air<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moist towlettes<\/strong>, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wrench or pliers<\/strong> to turn off utilities<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can opener<\/strong> for food<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clothing<\/strong> for each family member<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cash<\/strong> \u2013 if the electricity is out, ATMs will not work<\/p>\n<p><strong>Toys, Books and Games<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cell Phone<\/strong> &#8212; fully charged cell phone with extra battery and charger<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vehicle &#8212; <\/strong>fill tanks before the storm<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fire extinguisher:<\/strong> small canister, ABC type<\/p>\n<p><strong>Compass <\/strong>and local map<\/p>\n<p><strong>Matches <\/strong>in a waterproof container<\/p>\n<p><strong>Important family documents <\/strong>kept in a waterproof, portable container<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you live in an evacuation zone &#8212; LEAVE WHEN ADVISED TO DO SO!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pets <\/strong>&#8212; Make arrangements for pets in advance<\/p>\n<p><strong>Special Needs Shelters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hillsborough County provides a shelter program for those residents requiring special medically related care.
