{"id":21195,"date":"2013-05-13T16:41:36","date_gmt":"2013-05-13T20:41:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=21195"},"modified":"2013-05-13T16:41:36","modified_gmt":"2013-05-13T20:41:36","slug":"famu-names-alumnus-as-new-band-director","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=21195","title":{"rendered":"FAMU Names Alumnus As New Band Director"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong> TALLAHASSEE, FL<\/strong> \u2014 Florida A&amp;M University (FAMU) has named <strong>Sylvester Young<\/strong> its new director of marching and pep bands.\u00a0 <strong>Young,<\/strong> a FAMU graduate and former member of the Marching \u201c100,\u201d spent nearly 25 years at Ohio University, most recently as band director.\u00a0 FAMU Interim President <strong>Larry Robinson<\/strong> made the announcement last week after an extensive nationwide search process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cDr. Young<\/strong> is a talented and experienced administrator, musician and scholar who I believe will provide strong discipline, leadership and vision for the Marching \u201c100,\u201d <strong>Robinson<\/strong> said. <strong>\u201cDr. Young<\/strong> has had a stellar career as director of bands at several universities and I am looking forward to <strong>Young<\/strong> continuing the great traditions of the Marching \u201c100&#8243; when we deem it ready to return to the field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am honored to be back home at FAMU and fully embrace the challenge ahead,\u201d <strong>Young <\/strong>said.\u00a0 \u201cThe Marching \u201c100\u201d had such a positive impact on me and I know firsthand what this band means to FAMU.\u00a0 We will enter a new era of excellence for the band and I am proud to be leading the charge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Young<\/strong> has served as an associate professor of music since 1990 at Ohio University where he taught courses in marching band techniques, jazz ensemble methods, computer skills for musicians and instrumentation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs chair of the search committee, we were looking for someone who has the respect of his peers, the experience and the passion to continue the practices that have made the Marching \u201c100\u201d a household name,\u201d Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs <strong>Rodner Wright<\/strong> said. \u201cWe are pleased with our choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For six years, <strong>Young <\/strong>served as director of bands for Ohio University.\u00a0 Prior to that appointment, he served as director of bands at Hampton University from 1982 to 1990 and Lincoln University from 1979 to 1982.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Young<\/strong> earned his undergraduate degree in music education in 1969.\u00a0 He went on to earn his master\u2019s education degree from the Bowling Green State of Ohio in 1970 and a Ph.D. in music education from the University of Missouri-Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>The bands he has directed have been invited to perform at many prestigious events.
