{"id":20149,"date":"2013-03-21T13:26:26","date_gmt":"2013-03-21T17:26:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=20149"},"modified":"2013-03-21T13:26:26","modified_gmt":"2013-03-21T17:26:26","slug":"fewer-black-children-receive-antibiotics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=20149","title":{"rendered":"Fewer Black Children Receive Antibiotics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Black children are less likely to receive a prescription antibiotic than their non-Black counterparts \u2014 even when treated by the same health provider \u2014 according to a study published in <em>Pediatrics<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The findings are based on 1.3 million doctor visits with the same 222 providers, and were independent of age, gender or type of insurance.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time research has shown racial biases among health professionals. A smaller study at the University of Washington, showed that unconscious racial biases affected the amount of pain medication given to Black children when they needed it. And a Johns Hopkins study highlighted that primary physicians with unconscious racial biases tended to dominate conversations with Black patients, ignore their social needs and exclude them from the decision-making process.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Black children are less likely to receive a prescription antibiotic than their non-Black counterparts \u2014 even when treated by the same health provider \u2014 according to a study published in Pediatrics.
