The trumpeter\u2019s passing was confirmed by his nephew, <strong>Alex Bugnon<\/strong>, and the cause of death is undisclosed.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout his career, <strong>Byrd <\/strong>worked with musical icons, such as <strong>Art Blakely<\/strong>, <strong>John Coltrane,<\/strong> <strong>Sonny Rollins<\/strong>, <strong>Thelonius Monk<\/strong>, and <strong>Herbie Hancock<\/strong>. In the \u201970s, he formed the fusion group The Blackbyrds, and the group quickly spiraled up the music charts pumping out memorable R&amp;B-meets-jazz hits, such as<em> \u201cWalking in Rhythm,\u201d\u00a0<\/em> <em>\u201dRock Creek Park,\u201d<\/em> and<em> \u201cHappy Music.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Even though <strong>Byrd\u2019s<\/strong> roots were in bebop, he later sashayed into soul and funk, particularly jazz fusion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Influential jazz icon Donald Byrd died Monday at the age of 80.
